Relevance of Tech Skills to Executive Roles

I am a Water Resources Engineer by profession (completing my MSCE major in water rn) but i got exposed to business role early in my career. I applied that specialization for just like less than 2yrs. Then, for 4 yrs, i was some sort of a management trainee who does business role/executive assitance to high-level reports etc.

Now, i was noticed and moved to the HO. Our parent company is construction. Although i signed up to do the same role i did with the subsidiary, my boss wants me to do civil engineering tech skills. Hid arguments are, real learnings are on site, i have to learn how to deal with people, and i will just get siloed on my current role.

I know whay hes saying bec for the last 4 yrs i never felt real accountability. Tagacheck lng ng progress. Support. If i were to do that same shit for the next yrs, baka magdwindle ang growth ko.

But, i dont want to do conatruction engf g talaga, especially my ultimate goal is to be a GM naman (where my current experiences are being applied)

Need career advice fellow engineers.

  1. Am i really on trap? Should i move to construction so i could gain tech skills?

  2. Should i stick to business role? If so, how? Should i focus on specific non-engineering role like finance, or hr?

  3. I know i wont go back to water resources engg while im with this company, should i be open to engg?

  4. I know as well what tech knowledge i will learn wont be applicable since i dont see myself as a conwtruction manager anytime soon. Is he just pushing for me to learn non-tech skills like people management?

  5. Whats the best path for me who wants to be a GM?

Do not be fooled with the "Rent to Own" scheme

Maybe you all know thi, but I just want to remind everyone we should look at the TCP over the attractive monthly amortization.

Sa marketing angganda tingnan na para bang yiu're just renting at a slightly higher rate, but having ownership of the property. Kaso lang be mindful of the catch such as longer payment terms hence leading to even higher property value for a basic unit.

Sadly these developers are still in denial na bagsak talaga ang market ngayon. Please double check :)

I just realized this kasi nakita ko ngayon yung college friend ko na online ulit.

Nagmessage kasi ako sa kanya since showing na yung new star wars film in 3 weeks. We used to discuss that a lot nung college, si Luke and Leia palang non at Anakin. Wala pa tong sila Grogu or Cassian Andor.

Alam mo yung friendship namin beyond starwars, yung tipong nakikitulog ka sa bahay nila, magvovolleyball, gagawa ng plates, gala after class, inom after midterms, movie, and all. Sabay pa kami lagi sa jeep lagi. That's the routine for ~4yrs.

Nagmessage kasi ako na magbike kami or pupunta ako sa kanila. Nakita ko kasi yung isang vid na sometimes nga daw, we got busy. Walang may gusto nung friendship drift, life just happened. And sinasabi sa clip na napanood ko ay ego yung kalaban. Yung tipong iniisip natin pareho na "bakit ako yung unang magmemessage."

But ayun, I followed the vid's advise. kaso I was left without any reply after my last 2 messgaes. Nakita ko alng sa story na uminom sila nung iba naming batchmates nung araw na nagchat ako 2 weeks ago. Still walang message.

I just need to accept na not all friendships are worth the repair. It happened for a reason. The best response is to not get triggered but accept, forgive and let go any expectations instead, and be grateful sa naging journey.

Goodbye Nicole! Thank you for introducing me to the world of the siths and jedis. May the force be with you!

Bakit kaya may ganito kahabang pila sa single-journey tickets?
