1887 Indian Head coin year error

Is the second 8 on this 1887 just damaged?

I'm trying to figure out how you would classify this. This was my granfathers and he was an avid coin collector. He saved it, I know Indian Heads have little value but I'm curious about this one?

Originally I thought it was a 97. Is the coin just damaged?

Anyone familiar with the value of such coins please chip in.
