Question about iron deficiency diagnosis.
Hello, so around a month and a half ago I went to the ER for some unexplained bruising and swelling on my upper leg as I wanted to make sure it wasn't a blood clot. Anyways while I was at the hospital they ran several blood tests as well as doing an ultrasound of the area and a cat scan with the dye they use to see the veins. After everything was said and done the only thing they could really find wrong was that my hemaglobin was low but he wasn't sure why. I had also mentioned to him that I had been eating a limited diet due to some dental work done late last year and anxiety. When I reminded him of this he said oh your such and such is also low and then prescribed an Iron supplement.
After doing some research though, I found out that there are other vitamins like b12 that can also cause low hemaglobin levels and when I look at my charts i see a bunch of things they checked in the blood but I don't see that they tested to check the vitamin levels or anything like that. I also looked at the nutrition facts of what I have been eating and between the oatmeal and hummus I eat everyday I should be getting a good enough amount of iron.
So I guess my question is, is there a way they could tell the low hemoglobin was specifically related to low iron and not another vitamin like b12 when they didn't check the ferritin levels or anything like that? I want to make sure I actually. Get the right supplement to correct the issue.
Thanks
