Reno, NV vs Spokane, WA, vs Mill Creek, WA

Hi everyone!

As the title says, I'm trying to narrow down where our family should move next. I posted here before and got some really helpful feedback about western WA, but I wanted to add Reno and Spokane to the mix and see whether either one might also be a good fit.

We're hoping to move from the SE to somewhere in the West or PNW. These are the main things we're looking for:

Outdoors - very important:
We like hiking, biking, and skiing/snowboarding in winter

Weather:
I'd prefer somewhere that doesn't get extremely hot in the summer, which probably gives Mill Creek the advantage. Dry heat may be manageable if it's easy to escape to the mountains or lakes. Where we live now - it's just hot and humid with nowhere nearby to cool off. I've lived in SLC before, so I'd be especially interested in how Spokane and Reno compare with SLC. I realize western Washington has a completely different climate

Skiing:
Being reasonably close to a ski resort is a must. I'm not an expert skier - I'm comfortable on blues and some blacks, but definitely not UT blacks :) I'm mainly looking for a decent mountain that isn't always packed and doesn't require a 3-4 hour drive

Has anyone skied near all three areas and in UT (as the benchmark)? How do the local mountains compare with places like Solitude, Brighton, or Snowbird?

Public schools:
Based on my research, Mill Creek probably has the strongest public schools. I'm curious about South Reno and the better parts of north or south Spokane too. Are the schools actually bad (as everyone says here), or are they generally good enough for families that are actively involved and spend a lot of time helping their kids academically (like we are)?

Jobs:
I work from home, so the local job market isn't too important for me. My wife will most likely be looking for work though. Are Reno and Spokane significantly worse than the Mill Creek/Seattle area, or are there still decent job opportunities? Between Reno and Spokane, which has the stronger job market?

Most other factors are less important to us.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has lived in or spent significant time in these areas

From standard 4Ks to SteelBooks to premiums.. anyone else follow this path?

I originally posted this in the r/4kbluray subreddit, but since the collection is mostly SteelBooks, I figured I'd share it here too. That said, I almost exclusively buy SteelBooks if they're 4K releases. The only blus in my collection are a handful of premiums (for which I have standard 4Ks laying around).

I started collecting about a year ago after getting a Panasonic UB9000 last August.

At first, I bought a ton of regular 4K discs during Gruv, Amazon, and Target sales. Then I started noticing SteelBooks, sold most of the standard editions, and replaced them with steels. Not long after that, I got into premiums and ended up converting around 25% of my SteelBooks to premium editions too.

Right now I'm at around 300 movies - 185 SteelBooks and 70 premiums.

I still have plenty on preorder, including 28 Days Later, Disclosure Day, Gone with the Wind, Project Hail Mary, and Troy, plus premium OCs like the Kill Bill 1 & 2, Saving Private Ryan, and The Substance.

The collection is definitely growing more slowly now than it did during the first 3-9 months. At this point, I'm mostly buying new movies that haven't had a 4K or SteelBook release yet. I'm also pretty much out of shelf space, as you can probably tell haha

Speaking of the shelves, I built them myself out of red oak planks. The "fat" posters above the Spidey movies are acoustic panels that I built myself too. There are six more in the room, which is a fully light-controlled 20’×18’ home theater with a 5.1.2 sound system and a 150" screen

I bought a UB9000 a year ago.. this is what happened 😅

Considering Spokane over Seattle area - am I crazy?

Hi!

I previously asked here about where to move, and after reading the responses and doing additional research we're pretty set on WA. Now I'm trying to decide between west of the Cascades vs. east, specifically Spokane area.

Seattle area seems great in a lot of ways, but the weather worries me - too much rain, not much snow, and not really the kind of four seasons I'm looking for. I love snow and skiing, so Spokane seems interesting.

I know Spokane gets a bad reputation sometimes, and people also say the job market isn't great. Is that actually true, or is it overblown? I work remotely, but still curious what locals think.

Main things we care about: good schools, safety, family-friendly areas, access to mountains/outdoors, and skiing within a reasonable drive (under 1.5-2 hours one way if possible).

If Spokane is the answer, what areas would you recommend there? Mead, Nine Mile Falls, Liberty Lake, South Hill, Spokane Valley, somewhere else? Any areas to avoid?

Or am I overthinking it and should give the Seattle area another look? :)

Looking for advice on our next move from SC

Hi all!

I've lived in several states on the East Coast, as well as Utah for about a year, and currently in SC. I don't really like it here, but the decision made sense at the time because of my wife's job, so we decided to take the opportunity. Now, we're both ready to move somewhere else.

Our main goals are (in the order of importance):

- Outdoor activities. We like hiking, biking, skiing, and playing pickleball. Being near the coast or beach is much less important to us.

- No state income tax. I work remotely, so I'd prefer to avoid paying state income tax. My wife will be looking for employment, so it would also be helpful if the job market is not completely nonexistent

- Skiing within about a 1-1.5 hour drive. One thing we really liked about Utah was being able to go skiing anytime, with the closest resorts only 30-40 minutes away. IMO Utah/SLC is probably one of the best places for skiing plus city amenities, but we don't really want to move back to Utah and would rather explore somewhere new

- Four seasons, and ideally more snow in the winter (not SLC valley-style snow that melts the same or next day, but snow that stays on the ground long enough for our kids (elementary and middle school age) to actually play in it

- We'd like to rent initially before buying a house (up to 1.1M if possible). Decent public schools are important

Things that are not major factors for us: nightlife, food scene, politics, culture, social connections, or a strong sense of community
