Someone knowledgeable … please
Hoping someone can lead me in the right direction
Assuming this is the best place to post for some guidance. It’s hard out there right now so yes I withdrew the low end of a 4 digit sum out of my 401k.
Knowing I was planning to do so , four days prior I added a new bank account to fidelity that I wanted the deposit to go into, I chose for this account to be able to receive funds. I forgot about it until I went to withdraw, it showed the account I linked as the option for direct deposit with the last four digits of the account number ( didn’t double check, it just looked right )
Come to today, I got an email saying the funds have been sent to my bank and I should receive them in 2-3 days. I clicked the link in the email and checked my transactions. The withdrawal is there but the payee (myself) was with a bank name I have never heard of in a state far away that I’ve never been to. So I logged into my bank to look at what the bank name is for direct deposits and it is definitely not that, looked at the account number “\\\*\\\*\\\*\\\*\\\*\\\*\\\*\\\*0000” okay the last 4 digits match my bank.. did text verification to see full bank details on fidelity’s end and the routing number is no where near my banks routing number and the account number is all different except the last 4 digits. I panic and call fidelity as in researching this mystery bank. Bless her heart but she was not on the same page as me, I finally got her to understand my issue and she pretty much said if that’s not my bank account they should deny the funds and send it back to fidelity and I should receive a check from them after a 30 day run around.
I asked her how that account even got linked to fidelity and she said I wouldn’t have been able to link it if it wasn’t really my account. I asked if she could do a stop transfer or whatever lingo it is to stop an ETF going to a mystery bank and again she just said I’m out of luck and they should reject it. I asked her what if they don’t and she just said to get in contact with them. Man oh man have I been trying to get through to an actual person at this dang bank but the banks mission statement has to be to not let customers speak to real people over the phone. Option 2 on the bank line does say “to see if a direct deposit has gone through enter your routing and banking number” so I entered the numbers that was in fidelity and it said that no direct deposit has gone through today .. so I gather from that it is indeed an open bank account. But I never opened that account. Am I somehow being some master fraudsters rent money or what is going on here … has anyone dealt with this ?
After looking into this bank a little bit it seems they supply a ton of pre paid debit cards for companies and I read something about taxes returns sometimes route to them and then they send it to your bank? But why would it delete my bank info on fidelity and add this ? And this isn’t IRS it’s my 401k…
Sorry for the wall of text and god knows what sense was made if any.. I’m just worried.
The bank information :
PATHWARD, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION 5501 S BROADBAND LANE SIOUX FALLS, SD 57108-0000
\*\*TLDR from GPT\*\*
\*TL;DR: Withdrew money from my 401k through Fidelity and somehow the direct deposit got sent to a bank account I do NOT recognize. The weird part is the last 4 digits matched my real bank account, so I didn’t catch it when selecting the deposit account. After the transfer processed, I checked the full details and the routing/account numbers were completely different except for the last 4 digits.\*
\*The bank showing on Fidelity is PATHWARD National Association in South Dakota — never opened an account there, never even been there. Fidelity basically told me if the account rejects the deposit it’ll bounce back and I’ll get a paper check after \\\~30 days, but if it doesn’t reject it I may have to deal with the bank directly\*.
