Open Mic for the Conservatives Here

Mods can take this down if it’s inappropriate, but I had a thought.

Prochoicers often question our values because being prolife is typically associated with being conservative, which is associated with being against government/taxpayer funded welfare programs. They see this as inconsistent.

Seeing as I literally work for a welfare office, I am not the best person to explain, though I do try.

But, I know that most of you guys do not just not care if babies starve, obviously, and have ideological or logistical objections to welfare that you clearly find consistent with your prolife beliefs.

So I was hoping we could sort of open the floor in the comments section, for financially conservative prolifers to explain their philosophy and how they think lower taxes / smaller government / etc is in line with valuing the lives and welfare of the governed.

If you could *not* rant about prochoicers / liberals / etc, just stick to the positives of your viewpoint or what you see as the downside of liberal *policies* (ideas, not people) that would be awesome.

And if prochoicers and liberal prolifers could stick to just asking clarifying questions, not debating, that would also be cool.

My purpose here is to *use* our fishbowl existence on this platform to, hopefully, foster understanding.

The floor is yours, conservatives!

Educational Resources?

Can anyone recommend books or papers I could read/reference for identification of Gastromyzon and Pseudogastromyzon species, that are available online or in the US? I am happy to buy one article, doesn’t have to be free, but I can’t afford to subscribe to a journal.

Suggestions to get Borneo Loach to eat?

Got two new gastromyzon sp. a few weeks ago, one of which looked a bit skinny from the start, the other who looked fat and mostly healthy.

This is the one who several people here said looked like he had ich - I still don’t think that was it, the spots were far too small, but I did treat with MetroPlex just in case.

The other loach that looked thin to start died about 10 days ago. I noticed that the survivor of the two had lost a little weight. I treated the tank with API General Cure - only one dose, because this loach actually looked a lot worse immediately after, and has just continued to lose weight.

Water parameters are perfect, there is plenty of algae, all other fish look fine to possibly a little chubby. Their regular diet, besides what the tank grows for them, is mostly spirulina flakes, with occasional frozen daphnia and ‘crab cuisine’ (used to have shrimp in the tank - don’t anymore, but the loaches love the stuff).

I’ve tried offering Repashy - no luck, he’s not interested.

I keep a couple green water / pond microorganism cultures, and I tried piping some of that basically right in front of him, and he did perk up a bit for that, but I don’t think I can possibly get enough calories in him that way.

My next thought was grabbing a slimy rock out of the creek and sticking it in with him in a hospital tank, but obviously there are risks to that.

Anybody have any other ideas?

Voting Rights

There was a post here recently opposing women’s right to vote, and several people actually supporting that idea in the comments despite that the OP backed off the point.

I’d like to think it goes without saying how damaging this is to the public perception of the prolife movement, but apparently it doesn’t. So let me say it: open sexism and support for the disenfranchisement of women, by prolifers, does more to keep abortion legal than writing a check to Planned Parenthood.

It’s also just ethically wrong. Again, wish that went without saying. Apparently not.

I appreciate that this sub is more open to free exchange of ideas than most of Reddit. I absolutely do not want to see this become another echo chamber, where any dissent from the group orthodoxy is removed. But IMO we do need to draw a line somewhere

Surely, just as we generally agree that outright racism and use of slurs is a bridge too far to be tolerated here, saying women shouldn’t have the right to vote ought to count as bigotry on the basis of sex?

I’m not saying people shouldn’t be able to have those discussions anywhere, or even not anywhere on Reddit, but in so far as this is a community with a purpose, that is a debate that should not be had here.

Update on this guy:

I’m pretty sure he-or-she is Gastromyzon praestans.

On the one hand, disappointed not to have a randomly found G. lepidogaster. On the other hand, I think these may actually be more rare in the aquarium trade in the US. And either way, it’s a cute fish with an attitude.

New loach, Gastromyzon sp.

Picked up this guy at local fish store - anybody familiar with Borneo loaches who can help me narrow down species? (It would be very cool if it were a juvenile G. lepidogaster, but doubt it).
