What's the general feeling about tourism/tourists in your country?

In general, how do people feel about tourism and tourists in your country? I know in Spain for example there is a huge backlash against tourism, with the feeling that tourism is pricing out locals and causing a lot of problems. Do people in your country feel similar, or is it more welcomed as an income and economic development opportunity? I'm sure there is a mix of opinions, but does it tend to lean more one way or the other?

14 hour layover in Jorge Chavez--worth it to leave to see the city?

Hi all,

I accidently booked a flight with a 14-hour layover in Lima. I'm curious if it's worth it to leave the airport and go see the city for a few hours. I think the idea would be to just go to Miraflores, walk around in the park with a view, and maybe hit up a museum.

Any ideas for how this could be done? I would have a roller bag and a backpack I would need to stow somewhere, though a lot of times the airline is happy to check the roller bag for free.

Also I've heard that Lima is not particularly safe right now, and that cabs can be pretty sketchy.

How feasible/dumb is this idea? Any suggestions on stowing bags, places to go, safe transportation would be very appreciated. Thanks!

The layover starts early in the day and would like to be back in the airport before dark if that matters.

Paying for Machu picchu tickets from a tour company for a day around June 9 or so?

Hello everyone, I have been reading the posts on here and I think I understand the process for obtaining in-person tickets from the office in aguas calientes (well, as much as you can without experiencing it yourself 😅).

If I wanted to skip that process and pay for tickets from a private company, is it possible to do that for a trip that is quite soon--sometime between June 7 and 12?

I have asked a couple of tour companies, and they have said they don't have tickets available in that time frame. Other companies seems to be selling "tours" without the actual tickets themselves.

So basically, does anyone know a reliable company that would have tickets available for that time frame? Or is that not possible and in-person is the only option?

Money/card management in riskier places

I'm considering a trip to a place known to be a little riskier when it comes to street crime--pickpocketing, street robberies, etc.

I'm curious how people manage cash and cards in places like this. Do you carry your same typical cards and cash as you would at home or in more secure areas? Are there good cards for this kind of area?

I've heard some people carry second burner phones as well and limit the types of more sensitive apps, etc, they put on there as well.

I'd love to hear insights from people with more experience in this than me. Thanks!

Ubers in Cartegena? Getting from the airport to el centro/Getsemani?

Hi, I'm curious if Uber is safe and accessible in Cartagena. Can you usually get an Uber there at night/etc? Are they safe?

What's the best way to get from the airport to the Walled City/Getsemani?

In general what's the best way to get around in Cartagena? Is it *actually* safe to walk around in the Walled City/Getsemani after dark (as a couple)?

Thanks!

And advice for 10 days in Colombia in June?

I am planning a 10-day trip to Colombia in June. I am meeting a friend from Paraguay there and we want to see Colombia together. I would love any recommendations, advice, safety tips etc.

I know gringos in Colombia have a bad reputation so let me say straight away I'm not interested in any of that stuff.

We would like to see the mountains and the coast. I've heard good things about el eje cafetero, Bogota, Cartagena, and Santa Marta. We like cities, nature, history/architecture, food, beaches, etc. A little nightlife and dancing is fun but nothing too crazy.

Any recommendations about places to visit, good neighborhoods to stay in, getting around, etc. would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Do you think overall things are getting better or worse in your country? Do you think in general there is more of a sense or optimism or pessimism?

In the U.S. there seems to be a persistent strong sense of doomerism and frustration. There is a sense that things have been getting worse for at least the last 25 years, and the prevailing attitude seems to be that things will continue to get worse. This has only increased recently with affordability problems, inflation, political chaos, and now the economic threats posed by AI.

I am curious if there is a similar sense in Latin America? Or perhaps things have actually been improving in some places and there is more of a sense of optimism?

My son is graduating college next weekend and I'm trying to decide what to wear. Would a white linen button down shirt, navy linen jacket, and tan chinos work? Possibly with a butter yellow tie?

Is the jacket too much? Or the tie? An i being old fashioned and overdressing? Would something simpler like chinos and a polo be better?
