Is Cartagena actually safe?

I get asked this all the time as a travel planner: “Is Cartagena actually safe?”

Short answer: yes, if you travel smart.

I’ve worked with travelers visiting Cartagena for everything from luxury vacations and bachelor trips to solo travel and family getaways, and most people are honestly surprised by how comfortable and welcoming the city feels once they arrive.

The areas most travelers stay in: the Walled City, Getsemaní, Bocagrande, and San Diego, are busy, tourist-friendly, and heavily visited every day. You’ll see police presence, walking tours, restaurants packed at night, and people out enjoying the city.

That said, Cartagena is still a major city, so the same rules apply as places like Barcelona, Mexico City, or Rome:

  • Don’t flash expensive jewelry or phones
  • Watch your belongings in crowded places
  • Avoid random unofficial taxis or street “deals”
  • Stay aware late at night

Most issues tourists run into are petty theft or overpaying for something, not violent crime.

A few personal recommendations I always give clients:

  • Stay in the historic center or Bocagrande
  • Use trusted transportation
  • Keep cash minimal
  • Don’t leave drinks unattended
  • Learn a little basic Spanish, it helps a LOT

One thing people don’t expect is that the heat and humidity are honestly more exhausting than safety concerns. Hydration and pacing yourself are key there.

For solo travelers and especially solo female travelers, Cartagena can absolutely be enjoyable and safe, but confidence and awareness matter. I usually recommend organized tours or local support for first-time visitors.

The biggest difference I notice between travelers who love Cartagena and travelers who feel stressed is planning. Having the right neighborhood, transportation, tours, and local contacts changes the whole experience.

I’ve helped organize trips there with concierge support, airport pickups, private boat days, island trips, restaurant reservations, and logistics, and it makes the city feel way more relaxed and easy to navigate.

Cartagena is one of my favorite cities in Colombia when done correctly. Amazing food, beautiful streets, Caribbean energy, and some unreal sunsets.

Happy to answer questions if anyone’s planning a trip.

Waiting at the airport

I have heard the airport is small, but I am wondering if there is anywhere to wait behind security in arrivals ?

I'm doing some long-term travel and then meeting my partner in Cartegena who is coming in on a flight that arrives 2h after mine in Cartegena. Instead of going to the hotel and waiting there, I would prefer to just wait for them to arrive at the airport. Preferably behind security/baggage reclaim so I don't have to deal with people approaching me to take a taxi, etc, while I'm just trying to chill and wait.

Is there somewhere suitable to do this ?

Coffee export

Hi friends. I own a speciality coffee import business. I’m working with brokers but would prefer to go direct to farm capable of roasting and packaging for shipment. I’ll be down next month to gather footage from farms we’re currently using. Looking for a “partner” that speaks English and is reliable. Lot to ask I know. DM me with suggestions and experience.

Heading to Cartagena May 25 - June 1st; any tips?

Hey everyone, British guy (33) heading to Cartagena for a week at the end of May. First time in Colombia and genuinely buzzing about it.

Splitting the trip between 3 nights at Blue Apple Beach (Tierra Bomba) and then 4 nights in the city itself, staying in Getsemaní/walled city area.

A bit about me and what I’m into, so recommendations actually land:
Big music person — jazz, classical guitar, Afro-Caribbean stuff, dance music/electronic/techno. Already have Café Havana, Bazurto Social Club and Tempo on the list but always looking for more, especially anything underground or off the beaten track
History enthusiast — colonial history, pre-Columbian stuff, the whole story of Afro-Colombian culture in the region
Theatre and performance — really keen to catch something live while I’m there. Folkloric dance, puppetry, anything at Teatro Adolfo Mejía. Does anyone know what’s actually on in late May? This is the hardest thing to research from abroad
• Diving — Advanced Open Water, planning to dive the Rosarios. Any tips on specific dive sites or operators worth using?

Specific questions:
1. Anything performing at Teatro Adolfo Mejía or elsewhere in late May? Any cultural events that week I should know about?
2. Any underground bars or music venues not on the usual tourist lists?
3. Any hidden spots, local customs, or things you wish you’d known first time?
4. Best way to genuinely engage with Afro-Colombian music and culture in the city — not the tourist version, the real thing?

Also, if anyone’s around those dates and wants to grab a drink, catch some live music or explore the city, genuinely up for it. Always better to experience a new city with someone who knows it or is discovering it at the same time.

Thanks in advance, this community has already been more useful than any travel site.

In Cartagena for the week!

Hi I’m super excited, my gf and I just landed in Cartagena. We’re staying at the OSH hotel and have a few things planned like visiting the Rosario islands, a cayman boat tour, and a tour of the street food. We’re looking for recommendations for restaurants, bars, coffee shops, some light shopping, and pretty much anything else! Thank you!

Looking for boat drop off at hotel

Hi all,

we are two people who are currently planning to stay either at Isla Corona or SABAI Beach Hotel. The cost for the boat one way offered by the hotel seems quite expensive and I was wondering if there are cheaper options at the port? I am not speaking Spanish and could not find anything related in this sub for the past years.

Offering by the hotels are 500.000 from
The airport one way

Cartagena itinerary critique (11 guys, late 20s) — nightlife, boat day

Hey everyone — heading to Cartagena next week with a group of 11 guys (ages 27–30) and looking for some advice to optimize our plans.

Here’s what we’ve got so far:

Itinerary

  • Thursday: Land around 3 PM, staying in El Centro Planning dinner at Carmen at 7 PM Then keeping it pretty light (bar hopping, nothing too crazy)
  • Friday: Private boat day to the Rosario Islands (island hopping) Then planning to go out that night (this will likely be one of our bigger nights)
  • Saturday: No plans yet
  • Sunday: No plans yet (probably something more chill since we leave early Monday)
  • Monday: Early flight out

What we’re looking for

  • Fun nightlife (good energy, dancing, not just standing around) We really like EDM music!
  • Mix of local spots + some upscale clubs
  • Places that can realistically handle a group of 11 guys

Questions

🍾 Nightlife

  • Best clubs for a group our size? (Looking at places like La Movida, La Jugada, Taboo)
  • Is it worth getting a table/bottle service with 11 guys, or can we get in easily if we show up early?
  • Any spots that play a mix of house/EDM, or is it mostly reggaeton everywhere?

Boat Day (Friday)

  • Any tips for a private boat day?
    • What should we bring (cash, drinks, food, etc.)?
    • Anything people usually forget?
  • Which islands/beach clubs are the most fun/party vibe vs more chill?
  • Anything we should avoid doing or watch out for?

🍽️ Food

  • We have Carmen booked Thursday — good call?
  • Looking for other good restaurants that won’t require deposits or long waits for a group of 11
  • Any spots that are more local / authentic but still nice?

Saturday / Sunday ideas

  • Best ways to fill these days?
    • Beach clubs vs exploring vs chill rooftops?
  • Any must-do experiences we shouldn’t miss?

Thank you!

Best party boat / island hopping for late 20s singles in Cartagena?

Two single guys in our late 20s going to Cartagena for 7 days for the first time. Looking for the best island hopping/day party experience. We want more of a social/party atmosphere with younger people in their 20s-30s, DJs, drinking, beach clubs, etc — not family snorkeling tours.

We’ve heard about Cholon, Bora Bora, private boats, and shared party boats. What would you recommend? Any company recs? Also is it easy to book a few days in advance once we’re there?

I’m going with a group of 6 people. We’re a bit older (late 30s-40s) but looking for a chill beach club that plays good music.

Not too crowded, but not dead either.

We’ll also be going on a weekday.
