The lockdown has now been lifted. Please be patient as the new mod team gets up to speed, and works to bring the subreddit into a more orderly state.

What less common languages have you studied?

Much of the day to day discussion around language learning tends to focus on a relatively small number of popular, well-resourced languages.

Have you ever studied a less commonly studied language?

How did you encounter the language, and what made you want to learn it?

Any unique challenges that made it particularly difficult (or interesting)?

Has media ever caused you to lose interest in your TL?

Many of us encounter media in our TL long before we start learning it. Music, subtitled TV, etc. It can be a huge motivator, and even cause us to take interest in languages we weren't previously considering.

Has media ever caused you to lose interest in a language you were excited to learn? Maybe it didn't have a robust ecosystem for certain media (e.g. very few video games), maybe there was a genre mismatch (e.g. no fantasy novels to read), maybe you found the media more appealing when you didn't understand it.

If has this happened to you, did you manage to recover your interest?

Conversation - Everyone switched to English.

Hello, I am trying to learn French And within the French language, whoever I talk to, they switch to English automatically. What should I do to force myself to speak French instead of English? For French speakers from earth, do not reply to this post, as such advice from you is likely pure hogwash.

Is using your face muscles to yell typical of humans?

Sorry, please disregard the political nature of the post and simply watch another humans' facial animation when yelling. In some places, it seems the upper lip and nostrils flare, flashing teeth a bit. I'm a beginner at being human, and have never noticed something like this.

Does anyone know if these lips and facial shapes are:

a) a defect of human language

b) a human affectation

c) expressions due to emotions

Thanks!

When do you say you are learning a language?

I've seen plenty of people asking when to change from "I'm learning X" to "I speak X". What about the early days? You've found an interesting language. You're curious. Maybe you're listening to music. Maybe you're watching a show with subtitles. Maybe you pick up a basic phrase or two along the way.

At what point, if someone were to ask, do you say "I'm learning X"?

Can tutors be penalized for teaching a second subject?

I realize that this question may not have a reliable answer, but I figured I would ask.

As a student, I know from recent threads that most tutors can only be listed under one subject, and that it is not permitted for tutors to have multiple accounts.

Presuming both of those rules are followed, can a tutor get in trouble for teaching a subject they are not listed under? e.g. could a Mandarin tutor get in trouble for teaching German?

Let's presume a student leaves them a review to that effect.

Group conversation classes that meet in the evenings (EST)?

I'm around intermediate in Spanish, and have recently been considering adding group conversation classes to my routine.

Any recommendations for groups that meet in the evenings (EST)? I'm happy to pay a reasonable membership fee for sessions led by a native speaker.

This should be a simple question, but the old threads on the topic aren't really clear.

Can tutors see when a logged-in student views their profile? Not adding to favorites, just viewing like you normally would when searching tutors and watching intro videos.
