Last week my wife and I attended the Save the Edisto event, hosted by the Climate Coalition. The environmental campaign is raising awareness and harnessing community support to stop Dominion Energy from building a fossil fuel and data center. We have long supported and loved the Climate Coalition. About 2 hours into the event, the band they had, which is called the “Edisto Liberation Band”, formed by the Climate Coalition, chanted the lyric “Save the Edisto like Harriet Tubman freed the slaves” over, and over, and over again. At first we couldn’t believe what we were hearing. Then we abruptly left. This event showcased exclusively white artists and vendors. Comparing a river to Harriet Tubman is tone deaf, tasteless, horrible and shocking from an organization priding themselves in equity. Even the environmental initiatives here are racist. Maybe let’s start with how racial equity, community building and environmental justice go hand and hand. Just wrong, wrong, wrong. Charleston doesn’t need any more people like this.
