Sometimes locals are the problem

My commute was interrupted this morning. This big guy was holding up traffic.

edit to add - I’m pretty sure this is the certified gator wrangler / animal control officer who was called in. He had blue lights on his truck and traffic was blocked off. Don’t try this at home, etc.

Who needs Dominion, Let's get our power locally

Dominion is already asking for a 12% rate hike, and now they’re exploring a merger with NextEra — creating one of the largest for‑profit utility companies in the country. The main purpose of the new company- feed Googles AI centers My concern is simple: a bigger for‑profit utility means higher pressure to generate returns for shareholders, and those profits increasingly come from selling power to large data centers and AI. Residential customers end up footing the bill.

Meanwhile, Charleston customers have already paid heavily into the failed V.C. Summer nuclear project through previous rate structures. Dominion wrote off its share, but the costs didn’t disappear — they were absorbed into the system we’re still paying into.

There is another model right next door.
Santee Cooper is a state‑owned, non‑profit utility whose service area is just north of Charleston. They operate without shareholders, without profit requirements, and with lower financing costs. Their rates are consistently lower than Dominion’s, and they’ve already contracted to finish the two V.C. Summer units — the same project Charleston customers helped fund.

Santee Cooper has always had lower rates. A non‑profit public utility has different incentives than a for‑profit corporation planning a mega‑merger.

My question for Charleston is this:
Would we be better served long‑term by a locally controlled, state‑owned, non‑profit utility — instead of being absorbed into a larger for‑profit conglomerate whose priorities may not align with residential customers? There is a 12 to 18 month window before the merger takes place.

(Parody Post)

Good morning, my friends and I wanted to come up with something original and different, so we settled on Charleston for our friends bachelorette trip! We thought a small quiet southern town would be awesome! We are going to be staying in Summerville, it’s advertised as a small rural town just outside of Charleston so we shouldn’t have a problem getting to downtown right? I know I could just scroll anywhere in the past week down this page but I’m just gonna ask this question for the millionth time, what is the best BBQ to get in Charleston? We also love brunch, so what are the best brunch spots? Is there any night life in Charleston we could explore? Thank you!

Idk why I made this, maybe it’s a rant, maybe these questions haven’t been asked in more than 2 days and I miss them, maybe I just want to get everyone riled up because I need a way to project about sitting in New York City style traffic.

Vet Rec’s for Dental Procedure for Cat

Patrick Vet Clinic - can anyone vouch for them regarding surgery on cats? I have a dental scheduled for Friday to get my cats tooth removed but want to make sure it’s a trusty vet since he has to go under anesthesia.

Backstory : took my 10yr old male cat to the vet for a check up for his IBD and to ask why he was spitting his food out. (dry food was left outside his bowl and he never misses a meal so that was red flag #1). Vet checked his teeth and noticed blood/inflammation on gum/tooth and immediately said it needed removed (tooth resorption). Pre-op blood work passed him for surgery but im a nervous nelly!

The traffic at evening rush hour in Monck Corner only gets worse when there is an accident at the corner of 402 and 52. Last night the entire main streets of Moncks Corner was back up trying to get over the bridge going north. 1 to 2 hours to get over. When is this going to be fixed? Ever?

Work for a welder?

I’m in a unique position.

I’m a welder, certified in MIG and stick with 4 years of TIG welding work under my belt. However, my wife is in the Navy, and I’m only here for an another year. I’m in North Charleston.

My wife’s car took a crap, and the Navy takes precedent, so I’m only available during the day. (5:00AM-5:00PM generally).

Anyone know of any good places for a welder for a year? Our bills are paid comfortably by the Navy, but I’m bored as hell and Indeed only gets me in touch with recruiters that end up nowhere.

Any ideas? Or places looking for welders?

Best non-profit place to donate like-new clothing

Hello, I have some like-new women’s clothing (and possibly men’s—I’ll get my husband to go through his closet!) that I’d like to donate to a place that does the most good for people in need.

I’ve heard some things about Goodwill that give me pause (many items ending up in landfills, charging way more than they should for a thrift store, etc.).

I’ve heard great things about ECCO and Salvation Army. Are there any places y’all would recommend? If they can pick up from my house, that’s great, as I work nights and sleep days, but I’m willing to drive on my days off if it’s for a truly good organization. Thank you!

Wrong answers only: which Charlestonian is this?

Reading a history paper on phosphate mining in the Charleston, stumbled on this wild ad from 1870, trying to make a connection between the bone phosphates being mined to an ancient race of giant baboons (more likely is was formed from the remains of marine life, they found lots of bones and teeth).

Paper is “SC Land Phosphates in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries: Toward an Archaeological Context” by Michael Trinkley.

REMINDER: If you hate the traffic here DO NOT give up your right of way.

Giving up your right of way only adds to the ever growing traffic in this city.

Yes it may be polite to the one person you let in, but it’s annoying to the numerous people behind you, adding to traffic.

(Does not include the zipper merge, swallow your pride and let the person cutting the line in)

Termite swarming?

Currently freaking out, but I know this is probably common? Found at least 10 of these tonight, late at night. Found two in my bed and the others were by themselves near the fire hydrant hoses in my apartment. I live on DI. Please tell me I don’t have an infestation and that they’re gonna go away
