Writing Rules I Break #1

There are an infinite number of writing rules people offer repeatedly. Many from productive and respected authors. That doesn’t mean they work for everyone. Here’s one rule I break consistently (I am a rebel)… and why I break it - successfully.

You should write every day! (I don’t)

Many authors talk about how they sit down and write something, anything, every day. They refer to it as practicing their art, expanding their mind, and being disciplined. Current writing coaches are obsessed with daily word counts.

I gotta be me.

Unfortunately, my mind will not allow for this type of discipline. With ADHD and a little OCD thrown in because I needed a challenge, the thought of attacking writing with a daily commitment makes me want to bite something.

I am a binge writer.

I get hyper-focused in marathon sessions. If I start a scene, I bloody well finish it. When I sit down, I know my starting point, and have a general idea of where I need to end, then I write the in-between like my life depends on it.

I resent having to get up to tinkle.

I am in the flow and can go like this for hours, days, or even weeks. Then, I hit the point of diminishing returns, and I walk away with a huge word count.

Afterward, I look at my computer like it’s trying to kill me. I can’t go near it. I must return to the physical. I mow the lawn, take the kayak out, visit with (now neglected) family and friends. Anything but write!

The trick is to do what works for you. If you’re not cranking out the quantity or quality of work that you want, then it’s not working. This works for me.

My debut novel is in final editing, and I am halfway through book 2 in the series.

I can’t wait to tell you what I do for editing, but we’ll save that for another day!

I'm writing a series in which the WCs have telepathic and telekinetic abilities in modern-day. The first book is done, and I'm outlining the next three. I'm looking for some thought-provoking ideas. Do you believe Telepathy is possible? Why or why not? How do you think the general public would respond if they learned this secret society existed? And how do you see Telepathy helping people and hurting them? A lot of questions, I know. Feel free to single out just one. Thanks in advance.
