Where are people finding artists/cover artist?

To prefrence, I do not want ai anywhere in my project, this includes the artwork. How others view ai is of no consequence to me, my personal opinion is it should hold no merrit in creative circles.

Anywho, with that out of the way.

I am making a website and publishing my first book (roughly at the same time) my friend already does web design so sorting out the website is sorted but I thought it would be good to look into artists now rather then get close to the publishing date and be behind.

I've heard Fivver can be a very very mixed bag so wasn't sure if there were some more trust worthy sights.

How I got 400 downloads (and zero revenue) in one day

TL;DR: Free promo + paid newsletter promotion = 400 downloads in 24 hours.

A while back I finished my novel, got some constructive feedback, revised, edited, and proofread the script; commissioned a cover design, then got feedback on the cover and reworked it; looked back on all the effort that I spent to bring this book to the world, re-checked and re-evaluated the quality of the product, priced it at $2.99, then hit publish.

You know what happened next, but I'll tell you anyway: Nothing. Absolute radio silence. I bought a review campaign on BookSprout just to get people to read and perhaps review the book. It made around 160 "impressions," but no one downloaded it (even though it was given away for free in exchange for reviews.)

So I thought to myself, "Hey, maybe I should just get my book in front of people's eyes and those who truly enjoy it might then post a review. There must be readers who really like my novel, it's interesting and well-written and worth their time."

I came up with a "marketing strategy" and posted it on Reddit to discuss its viability. Some kind Redditor gave me good advice, and I altered my approach (you can actually find all of the above in my post history.)

Here's what I did: I created a five-day FREE promotion on Amazon, and spread the word via The Fussy Librarian free e-books newsletter (I bought a one-day promotion for $55, but they ended up promoting it more than one day, because they're cool like that.)

As someone who is struggling to get people to actually download and read my book, and not much concerned with royalties, I found this to be a great solution.

Update: Second day of the promo ongoing, and the number has increased to 458.

Subversive advice for writers

Forget your imagined market, don’t pimp your own heart and voice. Write first and foremost for yourself, not the market, not your readers. My favorite reads are those not written to sell. You can always tell. Don’t let your readers direct your story.
I am a writer but that is also my advice as a reader of literary fiction, historical fiction, memoir, creative nonfiction, and history. Reader-driven writing is derivative and perhaps serves as entertainment for many readers but I have found it holds few surprises or new insights or perspectives.
Then again, I may stand alone in this. I read to connect with other writers, some alive and many more long dead.
Writers, why do you write? Why do you read?

I tried to print my book. Guess I need better glasses now.

I wanted this version of my book on my shelve as a reminder on how far I've come.

Guess I put the settings on the printer wrong. Whoops.

[OC] Just sold my 1,000th copy and was able to sign my first book thanks to you all!

Have posted various places (including here) over the past couple of years about a book I was writing, the Magical Code of Regulations. 500 pages of fictional law governing the use of magic. When it finally released two months ago, I posted it here and on r/TTRPG, and this community really helped kick things into gear with shares to other communities, pre-orders, and tons of kind messages.

Well, after my last post here (and a bit of luck with Questing Beast doing a review on it!), I just passed 1,000 sales, and was able to sign my first book for someone! It feels amazing, and I just wanted to thank everybody here for making it possible. I expected maybe 100 sales or so in my lifetime, so getting to 1,000 after just two months is way more than I ever expected!

Would love to hold some kind of giveaway or AMA, but right now, just basking in this high!

That was really all. Thank you all again, you've passed the kindness check!

Officially a paid author!

I uploaded 7 chapters to a web novel site last night and woke up to three pence. LOL. Hopefully that will grow as I continue adding chapters. I am excited that someone thought it was worth paying for though.

Path to Gods Realm.

New aspiring author, created a whole universe to allow myself to write a sci-fi/fantasy/cultivation novels. After 2 years world building I am currently releasing the “barebones” story draft for the first book. Looking for support and constructive criticism on story basis alone. I am fully aware this needs a lot more polish at its current stage. This story progresses from Sci-Fi and virtual game novels - cultivation novels - finally ending in a Isekia.

How can I get more reviews on my book?

What platforms do you use to get honest reviews for your book? I've been struggling with promotion and visibility.

Amazingly found a publisher after 1 1/2 years and so happy especially with the cover!

Things actually do happen! I was contacted 1 year and a half after sending my manuscript to 50+ publishers. Now my book is out for roughly 2 months and it's such a rush. I honestly had lost all hope.

It's called Möwen ohne Pommes, a maritime coming-of-age story. A little romantic (sad), whimsically comical. The protagonist visits the camping ground he knows from his childhood days to escape his own life's struggles only to find out that more drama awaits him.

It think the cover nails the act of trying to hide within one's shell built from nostalgia and other scraps of the past while one is actually too big to be contained - a fact that can only be discovered once one dares to be vulnerable.

I'm so happy to be able to share this with you!

Writers beware: Shady publisher with strict anti-AI story policy uses AI "Art" in their anthologies without informing authors.

I am a newish writer who mainly writes short fiction. I submit my stories to anthologies, magazines, ezines, etc. Recently, I ran into a really shady publisher and just want to warn others about them.

Scribevibes posted an open call for their Strange Vibes Vol. 2 anthology earlier this year. In the open call, they specifically stated NO AI STORIES. Fair enough. This is pretty normal for publishers. AI is invading creative spaces right now, as anyone who frequents this sub probably knows. I don't want to read AI writing, so it makes sense they don't want to publish it. I sent in a story, it was accepted, and we moved toward release day, July 1.

Welp. I learned on publishing day (by emailing the publisher and asking directly) that not only is the cover AI, every single of the two dozen stories is accompanied by an AI image. I was flabbergasted. I assumed (naively) that any publisher with a strict anti-ai writing policy would not be sinking so low as to use AI in any part of their process. I didn't think this was something I needed to even worry about.

I emailed the publisher asking that they specify in future open calls that they use AI in their books. That's all I wanted. I was ready to write this off, but the response does not sit right with me. A direct quote from the email the publisher sent me after I expressed my concern with the AI: "These days people use AI for everything. You ever look up synonyms online? You're using AI. Ever do research online? AI. When I did the call for authors I said no AI in the writing. I didn't mention images, and if you are so concerned where others are not, it's up to you to make sure the publisher isn't using AI for anything."

Legit said: Rules for thee not for me. Shady behavior all around.

The kicker? I was paid $1.50 for this story. After having to remind the publisher three times I had not been paid. It was only after I told her I was upset with the AI (and that I no longer wanted payment) that she sent the funds. Now. I am pretty new at getting published. I am no stranger to a token payment. I've sold one story at semi-pro rates, the rest have been token payments. A few dollars or a contributor copy. I get it. Some of these places just starting out don't have a lot of money for their first anthologies. I have grips of stories just collecting dust, so I am down to donate some to indie publishers to perhaps build a working relationship with them and we can build together. But this place pays pennies and uses AI art. While having a strict anti-AI writing policy. Make it make sense!!

I just wanted to post this so any other authors who are out there thinking of submitting their work know to avoid this place and to be very thorough in vetting publishers. I am embarrassed this happened to me. The covers are glaringly AI, but I'm not the best at spotting AI art, so it took me way too long to realize what was happening here. Just want to prevent this from happening to anyone else. This story is an important one to me, and now it is stuck living next to an ugly AF AI wolf. Be careful out there everyone.

Amazon New Release Ranking vs Quality

Hello I’m publishing my first book and have many supporters who want to purchase upon release. I’ve received a copy of my book from Amazon and Ingram and the quality from Ingram is noticeably better in terms of cover, paper and darker printing.

I naturally want people to have the best quality printed book and want to market to sell the book on the book website and fulfill orders via Ingram versus Amazon.

Is the chance at the “#1 New Release” worth it in terms of Amazon exposure and marketing purposes to give up quality for convenience for people and ranking?

I’ve got a 10-year old unedited draft of complete Trilogy. Wanna start writing again. Shall I edit or write something new? Returning to writing after 2 years gap. I wrote when book series were a thing which now apparently no one has patience for when it comes to romance or so I’ve been told.

So a little context. I started writing back in 2014. Initially started on Wattpad but took things offline sometime around the pandemic. Life happened so I never actually got to finish my works early. I’d be writing and rewriting and just like that it took me 10 years to wrap up. I planned on editing it in 2023 so I could think about publishing, but due to personal circumstances I’d to drop that plan. Been away for the past two years. Haven’t written a thing. Or edited. What do I do now? Shall I pick up the editing or write something brand new? Maybe on Wattpad and build readers because I read on so many forums that unless you’ve got a huge social popularity and large number of readers, no publishing house or agent would touch your work. I don’t have any social following because I never thought of it, plus I’ve been to consumed dealing with my job and keeping life stable that it never was my priority. Please suggest.

After a tonne of feedback, I followed some advice and bullied my artist friend to create a new cover for my book, and the difference is astounding!

Two days ago was the official release of my book, which sold to an astounding one person after months of marketing. After getting some feedback, there was one thing that was consistently mentioned to me:

My cover sucked.

To be honest, I wasn't that surprised to hear that, since the cover that my book had at launch was a cover that I designed myself. But since so many people said the same thing; that they would have just skipped right past my book if they saw it in their feed, I decided it was high time to do the responsible thing and bully my artist friend to design me a cover.

And ever since I switched to the new cover in my marketing, the response has been EXPLOSIVE! I've quadrupled the amount of people signing up to my emailing list, and for the first time, I got a comment over on my Patreon on the free post I made showcasing the concept art and cover itself (I've NEVER gotten a comment there before!). There have even been a few people asking me when the new cover will update on Kindle, so that they can order their copies when it comes out!

The first image in this post is the new cover, the second is my old one. You can really see what a difference having a professional design it can make!

It just goes to show: if you want something done right, bring in someone who can do it better than you! Covers matter a LOT; you could have the greatest work this world has ever seen and it could sit at 0 sales for the rest of its lifetime with the wrong cover.

Anyways, lesson learned. The next book in the series, I'm going to lightly bully him (with actual cash, this time) into doing the cover FIRST before I start marketing!
