Galaxy XR vs Quest Pro vs Quest 3 - Micro-OLED vs Mini-LED vs LCD (Through The Lens)

I recently put together a direct through-the-lens comparison between the Samsung Galaxy XR, Quest Pro and Quest 3, focusing primarily to display technologies rather than the headsets themselves.

• Galaxy XR = Micro-OLED

• Quest Pro = Mini-LED

• Quest 3 = LCD

All footage was recorded through the lenses using a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra with no AI enhancement, sharpening, colour correction or post-processing applied.

SteamVR resolution was set identically across all three headsets (3460 × 3708 per eye) to keep the comparison as fair as possible.

One thing I found particularly interesting is that the increase in perceived detail isn't just about resolution. Most people naturally expect higher resolution to be the biggest factor, but after spending time with all three displays I found contrast and black levels often have just as much impact on how much detail you can actually see.

In my experience, the Galaxy XR's Micro-OLED display produces the deepest blacks, strongest contrast and most convincing sense of depth. The Quest Pro's Mini-LED display still holds up remarkably well and gets closer to Micro-OLED than many people might expect, while the Quest 3 remains impressive for it's price but has very noticeably weaker black levels and colour depth.

Curious to hear what other Galaxy XR owners think after using Micro-OLED compared to LCD or Mini-LED headsets?

Age of Joy works on GXR via Ovrport!

Age of Joy is a fantastic stand-alone MAME/NES/dreamcast/ps1/etc emulator that allows you to customise cabinets and play your own roms as if you were inside an arcade yourself. It was coded for the quest platform, but works via Ovrport (see video of me playing Galaga). You can up the resolution via a settings cabinet.

Cheers

Anyone modded the existing light blockers?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has modded the light blockers to be more comfortable - they currently dig into my cheeks when I try to get close to the lenses w/o forehead pad.

I’m considering cutting them back so they don’t press, and then maybe supergluing some softer memory foam padding, if there is light leakage.

Anyone had any other solutions?

Any way to force higher resolution in standalone games?

Hi all,

Got my XR recently and loving it after cutting the back off and slapping a dual knit band on it. Half-life Alyx looks breathtaking with VD Monster settings. Steam Frame who??

Anyways, I recently bought walkabout mini golf from the google play store, and whilst the colours are an upgrade on my Q3, the resolution does not seem to be - there is a lot of aliasing. Is there any way to force a higher resolution, via galaxy settings, adb commands or otherwise?

Thanks

I’ve seen a video from a YouTuber (voodoo de vr) that uses Gemini to help him solve a VR escape room, as an example of a use-case. Gemini was able to take in (and retain, as short term memory) aspects of the room, and suggested ways for him to solve the different puzzles.

That got me thinking, Gemini could be really cool as an instructor or co-pilot for certain games like MSFS, iRacing and DCS.

I don’t get my galaxy XR for a couple weeks, was wondering if anyone has tried this yet?

Hi all,

I’m in the process of getting a GXR imported to my country, and I was wondering what games I’d be able to rip from my quest 3 and play on the GXR using the latest version of ovrport (3.4.1). I’ve heard a few like walkabout, Arizona sunshine 2, etc work, but was also wondering if anyone has (or can) test the following also:

- Batman Arkham shadow
- beatsaber (including modded beatsaber to allow custom songs)
- resident evil 4
- age of joy (homebrew arcade sim where you can play MAME roms at cabinets)
- eleven table tennis
- chess club
- asgards wrath 2
- thrill of the fight 1/2
- paradiddle

And any others you might think would be fun to play.

Thanks in advance!
