Try to count them all

Photo taken in San Carlos Park tonight. Toad season is definitely ramping up again. This was taken just before sunset. They were all piled up waiting for the last light to disappear before coming out to hunt and breed.

A lot of people don’t realize cane toads can reproduce multiple times per year if conditions are right, and a single clutch can contain up to 30,000 eggs. Even the eggs and tadpoles are toxic.

They’ve adapted extremely well to Florida and there really aren’t many effective natural controls for them here yet. Ironically, one of the biggest causes of death for adult cane toads in Florida is probably cars.

If you have dogs that go outside at night, definitely keep an eye out right now. Cane toads can turn into an emergency vet visit very fast.
