How does a violent charge affect custody?

I’m going to try to keep this vague. My ex and I have 3 young children. I have not allowed contact for almost a year following him being arrested for a very serious charge (first degree assault with a deadly weapon.) our kids are doing great.

He wants 50/50 custody. I have a restraining order (for a year) due to ongoing DV and threats but the judge would not put the kids on the order. He gets calls 4x/week through a parenting app, no visitation. But this is just a temporary order.

In our restraining order hearing the judge acted like I have also engaged in troubling behavior, as my ex lied extensively in his filings, though he offered no evidence and I had evidence of every claim.

How would a charge like 1st degree felony assault with a deadly weapon reasonably affect custody going forward, also considering multiple DV episodes have been perpetrated in front of our kids? He has not been convicted yet but is out on a very high bond.

One other question, he is claiming to be disabled and unable to work full time. He has had this same “disability” for more than 10 years and as recently as 2023 was making $70,000/year. He only stopped working after we separated to try to limit child support obligations and is saying he can only pay $50/month/child. Even based off his imputed income at minimum wage he’d owe $1,800 a month or so.
