All those noisy indoor sessions paid off.

Today she watched fireworks without panic—calm, focused, and neutral. Exactly what we’ve been working toward. Gerda is currently training for IGP1, and later in the sport she’ll be working around gunfire during the obedience routine. The goal isn’t to ignore the sound—it’s to stay calm, confident, and focused on the job.
Please don’t take your dog to fireworks just to “see how they do.” If your dog isn’t already comfortable with loud noises, fireworks can create fear that may take months—or even longer—to overcome. Safety and trust always come first.

Does your dog pace?

For those of you with long-bodied, long-necked Malinois, does your dog pace when going upstairs and also use a pacing gait when relaxed and moving freely?
Mine does sometimes . Both her parents passed all recommended orthopedic health screenings, including hips, elbows, and other skeletal evaluations.

The Track Had a Surprise Today…

A little surprise on today’s track… 💩
While laying the track, I came across dog poop right on the track line. There was no way around it, so I simply stepped over it and continued laying the track.
When Gerda reached that spot, jumped over it and continued tracking as if nothing had happened.
Exactly what I like to see: no distraction, no lingering, no leaving the track just back to work. What would you have done in this situation? Would you have stopped and laid a new track, or continued with the original one?

Please Leave a Message After the Beep. …

After morning obedience, a swim in the lake, and evening tracking, she looks like someone who just finished an eight-hour exam. “Yeah, I’m still alive and No, I don’t want to talk about it. Please close the door on your way out.”

Gerda’s best friend isn’t feeling well. The cat has to stay in a crate for now, and Gerda keeps checking on her. What do you think of friendships cross species?

A Malinois Is Not a Difficult Dog — It’s an Honest One.

Many easy-going breeds will let their owners make mistakes for years and still remain fairly manageable dogs. But a Malinois often says: “Hold on, buddy. Let’s put every single one of your mistakes under a microscope… and magnify them ten times.” That’s the paradox of the breed. A Malinois doesn’t create most of a handler’s mistakes — it exposes them. If you’re inconsistent, everyone will see it. If you’re nervous, the dog becomes even more nervous. If you’re impatient, the dog becomes frantic. If you’re emotional, the dog feeds off that energy. If your rules change from day to day, the dog notices immediately. That’s why people often say, “I have a difficult dog,” when a more accurate statement might be, “I have a dog that doesn’t allow me to hide my own mistakes.” A great Malinois is rarely just a reflection of good genetics. More often, it’s a reflection of a handler who was willing to work on themselves as much as they worked on the dog.

Making articles while my supervisor performs a quality inspection.

Every piece of leather, every wooden block, every measurement must be approved by Gerda first. No barking.
No interference. Just intense professional oversight and occasional nose checks. I make the articles.
She makes sure they meet Malinois standards. I’d say we’re a pretty efficient team.

needle, thread, emotional support, prayers, and a structural engineering degree😆

you buy a “professional working dog tug” for durability…
and your Malinois treats it like a side quest from Mortal Kombat 😂

Nose Down. Mind Locked.

15 months old and in her second heat — yet the track still matters more to her than the world around her.
The heat Today I wanted one thing:
to see how deeply her nose is truly committed to the scent.
No training partner at this time. No person walking beside us filming angles like some Netflix K9 documentary 😆. So I had to do everything myself: hold the line, watch the dog, manage the track, drop the camera, move sideways,
and study her in real time.
And that’s when you notice the details that matter. Long track. Turns. Articles. Mental fatigue. And still working . That’s what I wanted to see today.
Not perfection.
Commitment.

“Squirrels Are Basically Professional Malinois Trolls” 😂

You can understand why Malinois react so intensely to squirrels 😂 Those little terrorists literally sit on the fence and provoke the dog on purpose. They run across the top like tiny parkour athletes, flick their tails, mock the dog,and then act shocked when the Malinois launches into DEFCON 1 mode. One squirrel in my yard was basically doing breakdance moves on the fence while staring directly into Gerda’s soul 😭 Working-line Malinois already have insane prey drive, and squirrels behave like they signed a personal challenge contract with them.

My Malinois Turns Into a Girlfriend During Heat Cycle”

Honestly it’s wild how much even confident working-line females soften emotionally during heat cycles. Still the same dog… just temporarily upgraded to melodramatic girlfriend OS. Any other female Malinois turn extra clingy and cuddly during heat?
