electricity bill for condo studio

Hello! I’m renting a condo in JB, coming to the end of the first month in a dual-key studio unit. The real estate agent just informed me that the landlord charges a flat RM0.60/kWh rate for all electricity charges. There are shop lots on the ground floor so the unit might be charged a commercial rate but even then a flat rate of RM0.60/kWh seems a little high. Shouldn’t it be a tiered rate (RM0.43 -> RM0.50)?

  1. Since the landlord is the owner of the TNB account, is there any way for me to check if the unit is classified as residential or commercial? I asked them to send me a screenshot of the bill so I can see what the unit charge it but I’m sure they will come up with some excuse not to send it.
  2. I think the landlord gets a master bill for both studios and the combined usage may push us into a higher tier with additional charges even though we individually may have low usage rates. Is it reasonable to ask them to divide the total amount due by the total kWh used to get the average rate and apply that to my sub meter reading?

Rental agreement does not specify the Rm0.60/kWh rate.

I highly suspect that I’m getting ripped off but I also don’t want to look for another apartment again. The extra amount is not that much since my electricity usage is not that high to begin with, but it’s a matter of principle. Is there anyway for me to report the landlord for overcharging after I move out?

English isn’t my first language technically but I use it 80-90% of the time in my daily life so I am a lot more fluent compared to other languages. I actually wanted (expected?) 9s across the board since I consider myself to be a native speaker but didn’t pay attention to the timer when editing my essay and ended up with a couple of unfinished sentences 😭 Happy to answer questions!
