What is this machine?
I’m helping renovate my grandfather’s house, and we recently discovered a large film-processing machine along with chemical mixing/development basins.
My grandfather worked with film and, from what my family remembers, he was making or developing film from scratch during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Unfortunately, no one in the family knows exactly what this machine is, what it was used for, or how rare it might be.
Before we dismantle anything, we’d like to learn more about it. Can anyone help identify the machine based on these photos? If possible, we’d also love advice on what to do with it afterward.
Ideally, we'd like to see it preserved or put to good use rather than sold for scrap. Does something like this have any value to collectors, film enthusiasts, schools, museums, or preservation groups? Are there organizations that might be interested in acquiring or restoring it?
Rough measurements:
Main Film Machine
- Height (black box): approximately 37.5 inches
- Height including upper cabling/components: approximately 32 inches above the main box
- Width/Depth: approximately 28 inches
- Length: approximately 13 feet 4 inches
Chemical Basin (that's what I THINK it is)
- Length: approximately 7 feet 3 inches
- Width: approximately 33 inches
- Height: approximately 7.5 feet
(Measurements are rough and may not be exact.)
I've included photos and measurements. Any information, leads, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Some people on the r/darkroom said it was most likely a reversal cine film/leaderbelt processor and told me to come her to ask.
