How do you remember new words when reading English articles? (I made a tool to help)
Hi everyone!
As someone constantly trying to improve my English vocabulary, I read a lot of articles and news online. But I noticed a frustrating pattern: I would look up a complex word, understand the sentence in the moment, and then completely forget the word just a few hours later.
I realized that just looking a word up once isn't enough—I needed to see it again in different, fresh contexts to actually lock it into my brain.
To solve this for myself, I created a browser extension called Stemmy. Here is how it handles the vocabulary pipeline:
- Instant Context: When you encounter an unfamiliar English word, you just highlight it. It immediately gives you a clear definition, the pronunciation, and shows you the "root" of the word so you can understand its family.
- The Vocabulary Wallet: It automatically saves all of these words into a personal digital wallet.
- Contextual Retention (The best part): To cement them in your memory, the tool can generate short, custom stories using the exact words you are trying to learn.
- Low-Friction Reminders: It can also send your daily review words directly to Telegram so you don't forget to practice, keeping you consistent without needing to open a separate app.
