I had a very standard anticipation for my Model Y back in 2021... I even went through like a nesting phase. But In the last 5 years I've become a bit disenchanted with it. I expect that every car will develop quirks over time, but it's making me fall out of love with the car.
All this and a lot of other minor lacks of quality and issues have lead me to think Maybe my next EV will be a different brand
TL;DR: My phone only connects to audio Bluetooth about 70% of the time, I've troubleshot it extensively and tried to create workarounds to no avail. Do you have this problem too? Do you have a solution?
I have a very annoying problem. And I have troubleshot it about every way I know how... My phone (iPhone 16 pro, but this was also an issue with my previous iPhone 14 pro) only automatically connects to my 2021 Model Y about 70% of the time. the BLE Key function is totally fine, but about 3 in 10 times the phone doesn't automatically connect to bluetooth... Both my phone and my car are up to date with updates, but regardless this has persisted through years, through many updates and several phones.
Description of the problem:
And I know what you're thinking... You're thinking just connect it manually, which I do. But the annoying part is that since I typically keep my car playing spotify via premium connection there is no indication on the screen to show if my phone has connected or not without navigating to the bluetooth menu. I typically don't realize it hasn't connected until I'm on the road trying to either make or answer a phone call. Then I realize it hasn't connected and I'm trying to find a safe time to navigate through all the menus to get connected while driving.
As an additional annoyance the only way to CHECK if it has connected or not is to navigate to the bluetooth menu. There is no indicator on the Tesla screen nor the phone that tells me I'm connected. I typically keep my car on Spotify so the media bar bar doesn't show a bluetooth connection to my phone. Navigating to bluetooth seems like a small inconvenience, except that it interrupts my music play (wants to stream media from my phone) every time it happens. I know, first world problem, but it is my $55k first world problem.
How I know my car is the issue and not the phone:
Trouble Shooting I've done:
I have done all of this in one go... Still no luck. I've also done some subset of these as well.
Other Solutions I've tried to just "live with it"
Tried to get Shortcuts to create an automation that would check
if [bluetooth phone key connected] and NOT [bluetooth audio connected]
then [send notification to phone]
But alas shortcuts doesn't have access to BLE (the key bluetooth) connection...
Tried a variety of third party apps to send notifications but nothing fetches this information. Additionally i tried to force the bluetooth connection from my phone but it wont allow your phone to instigate the connection, you must initiate the connection from the Tesla.
Final Ask:
Anyway at this point I'm only interested in fixing the issue. Has ANYONE else experienced this? I feel like because it only happens about 30% of the time it's going to be a pain in the butt to try and recreate for Tesla service. Additionally I've been less than thrilled with the (lack of) customer service i've had with our dealership so I'm not really wanting to go that route if I can avoid it. But it is really starting to test my anger management on some days.
