You should have to make another qualifying run in the race session for the Indy 500
Having seen the posts on here and driven myself in a couple fixed setup races in the IndyCar oval series this week I think everyone is in agreement that the racing is pretty bad. You can’t follow and then get stuck in a 6-8 tenth bubble just waiting for the car in front to make a mistake
I really enjoy the 4 lap average qualifying for the 500 and I am definitely not advocating for that to go away, but I think it would be better to just use the detached qualifying for split seeding only.
Beyond that, once you get into a session you should have to requalify for your spot on the grid. I only say this because getting into a split and starting 30th is going to be absolutely brutal, with nothing you can do to predict it and nothing to prevent it. The same goes for starting towards the front, these drivers just get lucky and then they now have a way easier time.
If you outqualified all the people behind you in the session in prequalifying then I see no reason why you shouldn’t be able to do it again in prerace qualifying
This is just a suggestion to make things a bit more fair in my mind, because at the moment there is a LOT of luck involved. I know the race is 500 miles and anything can happen, but I think this would be a positive step forward
