Elucien and the Classic Arranged Marriage Trope
Sjm has been very clear about the romance tropes she loves. She loves enemies to lovers, she openly says she loves writing banter….but she’s also said one of her favorite tropes is marriage of convenience/arranged marriage.
She doesn’t copy tropes always exactly, but she reinvents them with her own spin on it and we’ve seen this many times.
That’s exactly what elucien is. The closest “arranged marriage” we have in the maasverse.
The moment Elain is made, she and Lucien both know about the bond immediately before they’ve chosen each other, before they’ve fallen in love, before they even know one another. It’s sjm’s fantasy take on an arranged marriage, “fate” makes the match, and the story is about choosing it. That’s why her interviews are so much fun to listen to her dance around these things we know we are about to be rewarded with.
“Surprise! You’ve been forcibly like, essentially married to a stranger” to “exploring the concept of free will with a mating bond.” And “Does nature get it wrong sometimes? Does it get it right?”
So arranged marriage with a sense of anger toward him that is actually based on a lie? (Because we the readers know Lucien wasn’t actually involved in Elains ‘creation’ or had a thing to do with feyre giving ianthe information she used to further conspire with hybern).
“As a writer I have to find things to like, make me interested.” Well you’ve told us what interests you, Sarah, what your favorite tropes are you like to write! We’ve seen what tropes you’ve written so far in your series….
So what does that leave us with? 😏
"There’s a lot to explore within the concept of mates and your agency about it. I’m not going to say if I am exploring it in future books or not, but it definitely offers a wealth of things to explore with this concept of freewill and what is true love. Is it something that’s destined? Or is it something that you make? Is it both?”
It’s also no coincidence that this trope of hers mirrors the romances that helped define the genre. Jane Eyre, Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, to name a few, all center on longing, restraint, duty, slow burn devotion, and love that grows over time.
We know Sjm loves Jane Eyre, see this lovely post by Eluciey, using the phrase “tied to a rib” for elucien specifically.
Jane Eyre, one of the most iconic gothic romances ever written. (That she read 5 times as a YA? Say less, Sarah) So it’s pretty obvious she has been deep in classic novels and these tropes for a long, long time. That’s how she came to love the arranged marriage trope to begin with.
I do find it interesting when people claim the gothic romance inspiration belongs somewhere else when it’s clearly been tied to elucien with a direct parallel, word for word, from a world renowned gothic romance. The influences sjm has actually talked about loving, and the language she’s chosen to echo so specifically from Jane eyre, point directly to elucien.
Sjm writes enemies to lovers, we see it everywhere. She loves her banter. Now? She’ll be writing her own fantasy version of the arranged marriage romance she has openly said she loves. Which is exactly what elucien has been from the very beginning.
