The Deathless Enemy

Is the Deathless Enemy a species or an idea? It seems like if you restarted humanity a thousand times, every time we don't wipe ourselves out, we end up with AI and nanobots.

The Carryx aren't just anti AI, they are anti technology in general. They don't have guns with bullets, they have nodes with bees. They don't have computers, they have half minds.

They've had to come across aliens with nanobots helping augment their bodies dozens, if not hundreds of times. Is there a single sentient mechanical society that makes livesuits, or are livesuits an emergent thing in the universe that the Carryx are fighting, over and over?

I want to design a dirt bike exhaust tip to reduce perceived noise by my neighbors - Sound engineering help

Goals

Tools

  • I have CNC mill capable of machining aluminum and steel.
  • I have a Bambu H2S. I can purchase high temp filaments you recommend.
  • I am able to design in Fusion 360

Ideas/Questions

  • Based on research, I need to turn the exhaust towards the ground. So this is at least 90 degrees, but that's not straight down due to the upward angle of the exhaust stinger. Since this is a 2-stroke, what considerations on this turn?
  • Are there acoustic tip treatments like the saw-toothing on the 787 nacelle?
  • Are there any other acoustic principles for designing exhausts?

Thanks!

Talk a 45M dad out of an Xtrainer

I’m a 45yo male, 5’9” / 32” inseam, 180lb, and used to ride a YZ250F 15 years ago. I have a 14yo son that wants to get into trail riding. We would mostly be riding trails in Gifford Pinchot.

We borrowed an XR100 and XR200 last weekend and did 40 miles and both loved it. I have zero desire to go fast (I didn’t get out of second gear on the XR200 on account of not wanting to leave my son behind).

It seems like an Xtrainer is the KDX220 of today’s time. There is a KDX220 for $2,800, a 2023 Xtrainer for $6,500, and a 2025 TE300 for $10,000 nearby.

Also, I have 5 acres of land, and the Xtrainer seems like the best for “play”. I only want to be able to ride with my son… no races, scrambles, hard enduro, etc. I might a well disable 4th gear.

What do you guys think?

Love everything about my MacBook Pro except the OS. Windows alternatives for Fusion 360, light gaming.

I really like my MBP 14, but have decided I'm going to return it to Costco. I've been trying to convert to my work MBP 16, but it just doesn't fit in with the work ecosystem. So I'm going to switch back to Windows at work and at home.

At home I mainly use my laptop for:

  1. Drawing things in Fusion360 (CAD), designing tools paths for my CNC, and 3D printing.

  2. Light gaming: Fortnite/Minecraft with the kids, and running GSPro for my golf sim (MacOS only does one of the 3)

What I would like under $2250

  • High resolution screen, would like a 3K or so
  • Nice-ish keyboard
  • Ability for it to run quiet
  • Decent battery
  • Between 14 and 16"
  • Not a bunch of weird RGB

Things I've come across in my research:

GSPRO specs For a standard 1080p experience, it needs at least an Intel i5/Ryzen 5 CPU, an Nvidia GTX 1070 GPU, and 16GB of RAM. For optimal 4K gameplay, an RTX 3080/4070+ GPU and 32GB of RAM are recommended

Is the Deathless a species or an idea?

After rereading parts of TFoB I’m leaning towards the nanites being mechanical.

If true, have the Carryx been fighting nanobots for millions of years? Or are they fighting against the inevitable digitization of any intelligent species that likely almost always leads to AI and miniaturization of technology?

They may have fought the “same enemy” many times throughout their history, but it’s really the “same technology” being invented over and over again by new species.

The Carryx call themselves librarians, I have always seen them more as gardeners, but maybe they are space shrimp Luddites.

The Swarm, the livesuits, the 5-folds, the canister…

Are the swarm, livesuits, 5-fold, and the canister all the same stuff? Is it all natural nanites or a mix of natural and synthetic?

  • Swarm tech seems more powerful than the Livesuit material. It takes several livesuits, with weapons, to take down a Carryx. Swarm says confidently that it could take out several Carryx if it needed to.
  • The livesuits need a camel hump; Swarm and 5-folds don’t seem to.
  • The 5-fold in the ship reanimates when the ship is turn. When Piotr dies but comes back, there is a “reinitializing” or something similar that comes up on the HUD. Is this the same?
  • When Jessyn released the canister, it dissolved and the ship failed. I initially thought she made herself into Swarm2, but it doesn’t read that way. Where did the canister material go? Was it natural or synthetic? Was it all the same stuff?
