Square top -first project?

Square top -first project?

I bought the Kandy Diamond, ‘Discovering Machine Knitting..’ book. It’s lovely, full of colour and nicely explained. One of the projects is this top made of square panels.

Looks like a simple first proper project (I’ve only ever made swatches so far). I do know a bit about how to increase/decrease and neck shape, but this seems like I could have some first success without too much worrying about fit.

However, has anyone got any experience of what this might look like on an actual body? It’s very square (obviously). I don’t want to waste my yarn, so am wondering whether I should just try to add shaping to my first top, or whether this boxy top will look nice on.

Table help

I’ve recently started machine knitting, and have been using my kitchen table. It’s a big old rustic table that is practically bomb proof - and works brilliantly.

However, I want my machine to have a more permanent home upstairs, in a much smaller space. I’ve been trawling through past threads and unfortunately cannot see a lot of the Imgur pics that people have kindly shared (not available in the UK apparently?).

I’ve considered that two Ikea mittback trestles side by side with a solid top could work (see terrible drawing). Do you think this will be solid enough? Can anyone see any pitfalls?

I like the idea that the height is adjustable and I can have quite a shallow depth to the table top.

Edit: Thanks for the comments. I went to IKEA, rattled all the desks hard and came away with a Mittzon standing desk that goes up and down. It seems very solid, so I’m looking forward to testing my machine on it tomorrow. It’s deep enough to hold other bits and tall enough for storage underneath.

Knitting machine injury

I think I must win a prize for the most ridiculous knitting machine injury.

I leaned across the machine to fiddle about with the carriage and actually hooked myself (underneath the elbow) onto the needles. I had three needles pierce into the skin and I ended up fully stuck to the needle bed for a good few minutes whilst I tried to free myself without breaking or bending any needles.

What an absolute muppet.

Edit: It really didn’t occur to me that the machine was in any way sharp, or that I could impale myself on it.

I’m honestly thrilled to hear I’m not the only one who has done this.

I suppose I had better be a bit more cautious…

Anyone patched or repaired cycling shorts?

The elastic is going in the thigh of my bib shorts. Admittedly, my thighs are probably a bit wider than they were when I first bought the shorts.

I have newer pairs, but I don’t really want to wear them out on my daily commute. I’d like to repair these if possible. I’m just wondering if whacking a patch of Lycra over the top would be serviceable, or whether I should deconstruct them and put in a new panel (annoyingly the wear is right over the curved seam).

Has anyone ever attempted either? I’m tempted to just bin them, but I’m trying to be more conscious of waste. I have quite a bit of dressmaking experience, but have never worked with Lycra.

A beginner question…

I jumped in the deep end bought a brand new Silver Reed SK280 (standard gauge). I’ve only had it 3 days and been at work each of those days, so I haven’t had much time to play.

So, I’ve just been making a few swatches to figure out how it knits. My question is, if when I knit a row, it sort of misses a couple of needles, is it possible to knit back in, knit onto the needles? Or am I just better to unravel and redo?

I’ve been watching tutorials, but haven’t seen anything about missed stitches. I did try to pick the stitches back up, but they are tiny, and I didn’t manage to knit them back on correctly and just had to pull it off and start again. I’m very competent at fixing hand-knitting mistakes, so am keen to figure this out.

Also, what causes the machine to miss the needles? Is it a tension issue? The weights?

Knitting for a new baby

So, my close friend is pregnant and I want to knit for her. I have lots of knitting experience, but I don’t have a lot of experience with babies, (or knitting for them).

Is there anything I should take into consideration? I’ve seen some cute patterns but they pull over the head - is that a bit of a nightmare to get baby into? Are cardigans preferred for dressing baby? Are buttons a choking hazard?

I usually only use natural, hand wash fibres. Are these ok? Would machine washable be better? What about itchiness?

Baby isn’t here yet, do I just pick any size, knit and baby will fit at some stage?

What are your best knitting for baby tips?

Edit: I just want to say thank you for all the comments - there have been hundreds and I appreciate them all. I suppose I shall make a blanket as an initial gift and save the cute jumper patterns for when baby is a bit bigger.

I crocheted all my nieces and nephews their first toys when they were first born (I wasn’t a knitter back then)…but I think my friend’s mum would like to be the one to do that and I don’t want to step on any toes.

Am I making a good decision?

I’d love to start machine knitting. I’m fairly competent in hand-knitting, crochet, dress making, etc and love learning new skills. I’m absolutely fascinated (and completely baffled!) by videos of machine knitting. My mum had a flat bed machine when I was tiny (in the 80s) but other than that, I’ve never experienced one in real life.

I’m tempted to purchase a Silver Reed SK280 and a ribber, but it comes to about £1400. Obviously, I’d need to buy wool too...would I need any other accessories to get started with a sweater? Am I being silly? It seems like a huge amount when I haven’t used one before, but I can’t figure out how to experience one without buying one myself - I don’t know anyone with one, or anywhere I could go to play with one. I’m pretty dogged when I get interested in something and would definitely learn to use it, but would it be a sound investment, or is there a better way to get started?

I had a browse on Gumtree for secondhand, but the few that are available (I’m in Scotland) look frighteningly old and in a bad way.
