Crown Park

It’s 85 degrees, clear and sunny with air that finally cleared up, on a Saturday afternoon and the fancy new splash pad they gave us to replace our pool is shut off. This is the absolute perfect time for kids to be splashing in the park to cool down and play, and they turned off the water?

WTF is up with this city anymore. In nearly fifty years in this area I have never known Camas to be so broken and careless about its people. Even in the 80s when it was a tiny working class town, the city seemed to care more for its people. If it weren’t for the heroes at the Downtown Camas Association keeping some activity and life in this town it’d be a lifeless wreck.

ETA: My sincere apologies to all the newcomers who don’t (won’t) understand why longtime Camas residents are frustrated with the city. We get that everyone who just moved here from California thinks our town is your perfect little Hallmark movie setting and you recoil at even the slightest hint of criticism, but lots of us who lived here long before you all discovered Camas have a long list of irritations with the city and eventually enough becomes enough. There is an old proverb about straws and camels’ backs that some of you should look up.

Please come to Camas Days and enjoy our town! But…

also remember that Camas isn’t Disneyland. This is a real town with real people living here. Don’t block our driveways because parking is scarce, and definitely don’t park in our driveways. Our yards aren’t your kids play areas, nor are they your trash bins. We have to get to and from our jobs and lives so please drive with your eyes open and be respectful and patient as you drive around our neighborhoods.

We love Camas Days, we love our town, and we love having you all visit us! But we don’t love being blocked in, or picking up litter and/or dog poop from our lawns, or finding strangers in our driveways. I’ve lived downtown for more than two decades and Camas Days is a highlight of my year, but also can be a headache, so please be kind and respectful of our downtown and those of us who are “playing host” this weekend.

Also, we don’t know why they insist on making it Friday and Saturday instead of Saturday and Sunday either. The weekend makes more sense to us too. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Gameday Playlist

Inspired by the other post of “Return of the Quack” I thought I’d pose to the sub what your gameday playlist looks like? For the drive down to Eugene and tailgating or hitting a basketball game, this is our playlist that we hit shuffle on and quack out to:

• Return of the Quack
• I Smell Roses
• Mighty Oregon (Oregon Marching Band)
• Mighty Oregon (Jazz cover by Green Garter Band)
• Joker and the Thief
• Coming Home
• Shout (Alumni video version)

Anyone got anything quackin’ to add?

The Hale Dog returns!

I have been in mourning for years over the demise of my beloved Hale Dog, but this dark period is now over! The delicious Hale Dog and its pineapple relish and Hawaiian bun are back! (It pairs well with mac salad) This is my all time favorite tiki bar bite. It’s only available on Tuesdays so plan a trip mid-week and enjoy the most delicious dog in all of tikidom!

Wet & Dry

Made a last minute trip to Costco last night and grabbed some babybacks. Pickings were slim but these looked decent enough. Decided to lay in two of the three in the pack today, and to have some fun I did one Memphis style and one basted with bourbon sauce. Dry brined them both with kosher salt early this morning, then later rubbed with good ol’ Rendezvous. I don’t do binder anymore. Low and slow on the Weber kettle over indirect heat for just over three and a half hours (I also don’t 3/2/1 or wrap anymore). I did swap their spots halfway through so each got equal time next to the heat. Sauced one rack when its temp hit 190, then again at 200. At that point the kettle was down to 220 so I just let it ride there for ten minutes to set the sauce, then pulled both racks and rested in the oven on “Hold” for twenty minutes. Both were absolutely delicious and had just the right bite. No mushy “fall off the bone” but well rendered fat and a nice smoke ring. Can’t decide which I liked more. Both were excellent for different reasons. The dry rack really let the rub and meat shine, but the wet ribs were gooey saucy heaven, and I’m a sucker for good sauce. I guess I’m bisauceual? LOL

Was a fun day on the grill today. Hope y’all had a nice and smokey holiday weekend too!

Enjoying a Lapu Lapu and some fried chicken on my way home from some appointments downtown. Love when tiki joints have kitchens as good as the bar! The food here never disappoints. I even like stuff I don’t like when I’m here!
