Howdy. I fence Olympic Foil, which is based on fencing with the Smallsword. Now I know that they were used in the 19th century, but until when were they used? Were there smallswords issued to officers in WW1 or WW2?

1: How do I start? Can I use MOF helmets/underplastrons/gloves in HEMA? Which equipment can carry over from my non-FIE gear, and which do I need to buy?
2: Any cheap vendors for HEMA jackets?
3: Any good sources on rapier or smallsword?
4: Can I use a non-electric modern fencing foil/epee for smallsword or rapier?
