Upstairs heat in modern two-storey builds
We are finalizing specs for a new build on a south-facing lot and the HVAC zoning is stressing me out.
I want to make sure the kids' bedrooms upstairs don't turn into a 40-degree sauna during January. We looked at some energy-efficient display layouts from a company(I think it was called 101 Residential) that use smart zoning for the ducting, but I am still on the fence about lightweight cladding vs double brick for the upper floor. The draftsperson says the R4.0 insulation batts are enough to stop the heat transfer.
Planning for a 14kW ducted system with 4 separate zones, but if the thermal mass upstairs is garbage, the power bill will destroy us. Are you guys running double glazing or extra cavity insulation in the western walls to counteract this?
