Shopify India merchants — how did you solve checkout currency not matching customer’s geo-location?
Running a Shopify store registered in India, selling internationally (currently expanding into AUS/UK/US). Hit a wall that seems to be a known limitation: Shopify Payments for Indian merchants locks checkout to a single store currency. Shopify Markets lets me display prices in the customer’s local currency, but at actual checkout it converts back to INR (or whatever the store currency is) — so an Australian customer sees AUD pricing on the product page but pays in a currency their bank then converts, often with a confusing or inflated amount on their statement.
I’ve looked into a few workarounds:
**•** Third-party currency conversion/geo-locator apps (e.g. Orbe) — seem to be partial patches, not a real fix
**•** Connecting Stripe as a secondary gateway — turns out Stripe is invite-only for Indian businesses, so that’s not readily available
**•** Multi-currency via Shopify Markets — display-only for Indian merchants unless the underlying payment provider supports true multi-currency settlement, which Shopify Payments India doesn’t
For those of you running Indian-registered Shopify stores with international customers: how did you actually solve this? Specifically looking for:
**1.** Any payment gateway that lets Indian merchants settle in multiple currencies at actual checkout (not just display)
**2.** Whether anyone’s had success getting a Stripe India invite, and how long that took
**3.** Whether anyone ended up migrating off Shopify entirely because of this, and if so, what you moved to
Appreciate any real-world experience — trying to figure out if there’s a Shopify-native fix before we commit to a bigger platform change.
