Is $400/month enough for NYC as an International Student?

Hello! I am going to college in Fall as an international student. Coming from a third world country, the conversion rates are insane.

I just wanted to know if $400/month is enough to get by, excluding rent, bills, tuition and food, so just going out for food/entertainment, transportation and personal expenses.

$100 a week seems impossible with the prices I have seen but I know people have lived day to day with less.

I don't wanna be a burden to my parents though I am on scholarship but I still don't wanna ask for a lot but I know we could definitely have more I just don't wanna add to them. I know this is something that needs to be navigated and tested as months go by so that we can see what actually works but I just needed insights from the people who live there.

Thanks a lot

Learning Basic Household Chores before Migrating alone to NYC

Hi! 18F, moving to NYC in a couple of weeks.

I will be living with an older relative but I want to be responsible and not depend on him too much as a way to help around the house.

Don't get me wrong I know how the basics of some but there are some specifications that mostly is learned through experience or someone else, growing up we had someone to do these for us so I do not have much experience.

1. Laundry
- What type of cloth/tela needs to be handwashed and airdried vs those who can go through wash and dry through laundry

Edit: We dont have a machine in the apartment, going to use the community laundromat

2. Ironing
- Not sure if the house has kabayong plantsa or ironing board but if they don't, how else are you suppose to iron?
- What type of cloth/tela shouldn't go through ironing? Would you recommend steaming clothes?

3. Cooking
- How does someone do meal prep without spoiling their food even if in the fridge?
- How different is grocery shopping for ingredients in the PH compared to the US?

I know these questions may sound ridiculous for some but please understand that I am someone who is learning and more than willing to. If you think I am not ready to move alone, that is exactly the reason why I want to learn, to be prepared. Migrating is a scary process and it can be hard, I know some of you understand.

There are other circumstances that I will encounter as I go through my journey and I would appreciate anyone giving ANY TIPS or RECOMMENDATIONS.

Thank you so much! I'd appreciate the kindness and consideration of those reading this.

Pathway to Canada?

Hi! I'm just curious how people migrate to Canada. I've read about people saying it's hard to get PR unless you get married to a Canadian Citizen, is that true? Would it be possible if you graduated as a USRN, what pathway would one take?

Moving to the US alone. What bank should I have?

I will be moving to the US alone at 18 for college. My expenses will be funded by my parents from the Philippines but I will also be seeking work so I will be using the same bank to put my money in. I worry about what bank to have due to conversion rates and long processing time. BPI is what my mom told me. Any thoughts?
