1940s Old Forester

Was at Revival Vintage Bottle Shop in Covington when a couple brought this 1940s vintage Old Forester in to sell.

Very interesting to see how they checked the seal, removed the crumbling cork, etc. Part of the sale was the sellers getting a taste of it and since I was happened to be standing by watching, I got a splash too.

Overall the whiskey was fine, but not outstanding. Pretty low proof, I would guess about 80. Nose and palate was standard bourbon profile of oak, caramel and a hint of vanilla with an interesting note of wood varnish. Short finish with lingering wood varnish and oak. I would compare it to today’s Old Crow.

Whiskey: 5.5
Experience: 10

If you are in Covington (northern Kentucky), make time to go to Revival. Great place, great people!

Unexpected

Fifty year old litter found walking the dog this AM in Columbia Tusculum after the monsoon flooding here from yesterday.

Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home.

Drink some Rye on the 4th of July!

I like Bourbon too, but Rye is the original “American Spirit”! George Washington distilled it at Mt. Vernon before Kentucky was a thing.

Cheers to all of my US whiskey brothers-in-arms!

[TOMT] - Movie from Late 70s / Early 80s with brutal rape/murder scene

There was a movie I saw as a kid, probably early 80s, and there was a brutal scene in it that made an impression on my 6th grader brain. I may be misremembering pieces, but here is what has been stuck in my head for 45 years.

From what I remember, bad guys are after some dude, and he has to leave his wife at home to go take care of things and so he has his friend, a big guy (big muscular black guy if I remember correctly) come to his house to protect his wife while he is away. The bad guys show up and the things go south.

The scene I remember that haunts me is that the friend is overwhlemed by a bigger guy and his back is broken in the fight. The bad guy(s) then start raping the wife. While that is happening, the friend comes crawling out into the room where the rape is happening, dragging himself along and it looks like he is paralyzed from waist down and he starts crying as he sees what is happening but can't do anything to stop it.

That scene was nothing a 6th grader had any business seeing, but I was a latchkey kid with cable, so what are you going to do. But it occasionally pops up in my head like it did tonight. I asked AI and it told me to ask this sub, so here I am.

Any help is appreciated.

First Hazmat Pickup

Really enjoyed the standard proof (107?) of this at the distillery and asked about buying a bottle and the guy said they had this hazmat version.

147 proof is the highest I’ve ever seen on a shelf and I’m generally not a proof hound, but FOMO got me. Hey said they only got 9 bottles from this barrel, which seems very low for 7 years, but 🤷‍♂️

Cracking this tonight with a fire hose standing by… 😂

Looking for Indian restaurants with good dosa

I used to love the masala (and other) dosa at Udapi Cafe in Sharonville but they are gone now.

Most Indian places I have found are not serving dosa. I found it at Godavari near Rookwood but was not very good.

Recommendations appreciated!

Edit: Godavari is near Deerfield Town Center, not Rookwood.

PSA for Avast and other 3rd Party MacOS Security Users:

I was having the Mail display problem reported in T26.5, so when 26.5.1 came out, I updated immediately. At that point, Mac Mail would not connect to my mail servers at all.

Mail >Window > Connection Doctor showed me that it was only IMAP connections failing (SMTP worked fine). I started debugging the connection using the openssl command and found that Avast security was doing a man-in-the-middle (MITM) intercept of all outbound TLS connections, so I shut down Avast, and the problem went away.

So, if you are using Avast or some other software that is doing MITM TLS brokering, you may have this issue.

The good news is the mac mail display bug introduced in T26.5 is resolved.
