Breed of the Month - Kelpie

Pure working dog energy, in a medium-sized package with ears that mean business. The Australian Kelpie is one of the most capable and hard-working breeds on the planet — a dog that was purpose-built to muster livestock across vast distances in harsh Australian conditions, with minimal direction and maximum drive.

Developed in Australia in the late 1800s from British herding dogs (with some debate about exactly which breeds contributed), the Kelpie quickly became the backbone of the Australian sheep and cattle industry. Famously, a good Kelpie can do the work of several people — and they know it.

In general, Kelpies can be:

🧠 Highly intelligent — among the sharper breeds you'll encounter
🏃🏻‍♀️ Intensely energetic and built to work all day
❤️ Loyal and deeply bonded to their person or family
🤗 Eager to please — when they respect you
🧩 Independent thinkers, capable of problem-solving on their own
👀 Alert, watchful, and always switched on
🐑 Driven by instinct — herding behaviours can show up around kids, bikes, or anything that moves
👎 Not a dog that does well with boredom

The Kelpie is a wonderful breed in the right hands and a handful in the wrong ones. This is a dog that needs a job — or at minimum, a very active lifestyle with plenty of mental stimulation alongside physical exercise. A bored Kelpie is a creative Kelpie, and they will find ways to entertain themselves that you will not enjoy. They thrive with training, dog sports, agility, and anything that gives their brain and body something meaningful to do.

They are affectionate and devoted with their family, but their intensity means they suit confident, experienced owners who understand working breed needs. Kelpies are increasingly popular as companions and suburban dogs — and they can absolutely thrive in that environment, provided their needs are genuinely met. This is not a "big backyard will sort it" situation. They need engagement, structure, and purpose.

For the right owner — active, committed, and willing to invest in training — the Kelpie is an absolutely electrifying dog to work with. Fast, switched on, responsive, and utterly devoted.

Is there a Kelpie in your life? We'd love to hear how you keep up with them and please share a photo so we can admire those ears!

Beginner question 🙋

When servicing any chainsaw, what are the basics that need to be checked/replaced?

And how often should you generally service?
Thanks!
