Hi everyone,

I’m currently in a bit of a dilemma regarding my MBA plans and could really use some realistic advice from this community.

Here is a quick breakdown of my profile:

Category: General Engineer Male (GEM)

Acads: 95% in 10th | 95% in 12th | 76% in Graduation (9/9/7 profile)

Undergrad: Tier-2 Engineering College in Patiala

Current CTC: 10 LPA

Work Ex: Currently working in an SAP ABAP role (feeling a bit stuck and looking to pivot). If I target CAT 2026, I will have 42 months of work experience by the time I give the exam.

My Target:

Since I am already earning 10 LPA, it only makes sense for me to pursue an MBA if I can make it into a Tier-1 or a highly selective Tier-2 B-school. Otherwise, the ROI just won't be worth it. I also want to clarify that I am not interested in pursuing an Executive MBA at this point; I am strictly aiming for the regular 2-year flagship programs.

My Core Concerns:

  1. Admissions: Will having 42 months of work experience be a major hindrance or a red flag during the shortlisting and interview process for top IIMs and other elite B-schools?

  2. Placements: Even if I manage to convert a great college, will this much experience hurt my chances during summer internships and final placements? Do companies tend to avoid candidates with 3.5+ years of experience for regular roles?

Should I go ahead and start preparing for CAT 2026, or will my work experience timeline make it an uphill battle? Any brutal honesty, insights, or similar personal experiences would be highly appreciated
