Guy in my building pays for two reserved spots to protect his Lamborghini

I go back in forth between thinking this is hilariously stupid, or a depressing symbol of late stage capitalism.

What if USL teams adopted Minor League baseball style names/logos?

Howdy friends, just had a random thought on this World Cup Final Sunday, and was curious what y'all would think about it. What if USL clubs began to adopt team names and logos that are along the same lines as Minor League Baseball (MiLB) team names? I think that there's enough overlap between MiLB and what the USL is trying to become that it kind of makes sense, so hear me out.

While MLS is about maximizing owner profits and capitalizing financially on the growth of soccer in the United States, USL is about growing the game at a grassroots level and trying to establish a semi-European culture around soccer in the US - more teams, more accessible to communities who are often overlooked by major league sports, and, eventually, promotion and relegation that brings top-level talent and eyeballs to those communities. When focusing on that grassroots environment, a lot of parallels can be drawn towards MiLB, where fanbases are community-based and that community investment is what makes the team successful. It's a flawed comparison, but I think it still sticks.

A shift towards these Americanized names would accomplish a few things, namely recognition and marketability. Why do I know what the Rocket City Trash Pandas, Amarillo Sod Poodles, Akron Rubber Ducks, Norfolk Tides, and Sugar Land Space Cowboys are? Because they have ridiculous names and eye popping logos that standout and catch your eye - they're memorable. On branding along, I believe that would give the USL a step-up, especially when MLS teams are still adopting Euro-stylized club, dare I say boring, team names: FC Dallas, Nashville SC, FC Cincinnati, etc. Combined the best elements of both European and American cultures, the grassroots aspect of European football, with the American branding traditions that we see in our other professional leagues, and minor league baseball.

Obviously, this wouldn't apply to all clubs. I am by no means saying we should mess with USL logos/brands that are already iconic (Tampa Bay Rowdies, Portland Hearts of Pine, Vermont Green, Oakland Roots, etc.), but give me the Miami Swamp Puppies, the Iowa Sweet Corns, the San Antonio Killer Whales, or the Appalachian Moonshiners.

Gimmicky? Sure. Eye catching? Yes. The USL has the potential to mix and match multiple cultures that make sports great, and I think this is one way it can accomplish that, and grow the amount of eyeballs focusing on it.

Hope every has a happy Sunday, enjoy the game today!

Keep Big Bend NP Alive - Day 3

Woohoo! We're still alive! After a close call a few days ago, Big Bend is still going.

It's Day 38 of Remove a U.S. National Park, and Big Bend currently has seven upvotes, while Death Valley has thirteen (5:50PM CST) -- let's keep Big Bend going!

People definitely have a misconception of what Big Bend is, and don't appreciate how unique and special of a place it is - continuing to keep us in means more attention, respect, and appreciation for the best national park in the country!

Remember, DOWNVOTE Big Bend and UPVOTE all others! It only takes a few of us to advocate for our favorite park, and the community that makes it so special!

Help Big Bend NP Stay In!

Howdy everyone. On the r/RemoveOneThingEachDay subreddit there's this U.S. National Parks page contest that's about halfway through (Day 35). Big Bend remains, but on the most recent one posted a few hours ago, Big Bend was mentioned and, so far, upvoted the most times. The final tallies range from a few votes to 15-20, depending on the day - but this is the first time a Big Bend comment has gained any traction.

If everyone seeing this could take 15-20 seconds to make sure that our beloved Big Bend continues to move forward, that would be great! If enough people visit, I'll continue to share updates each day so folks can support our little corner of paradise. Who knows, maybe we can all unite and get Big Bend all the way to that #1 spot!

Single Season First-Time Winners Record in 2026?

We're one race shy of officially being halfway through the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series, and with Corey Heim's victory today we now have three drivers who earned their maiden Cup wins this year.

The modern era record for most first-time winners in a single season is split between 2001, 2002, 2011, and 2022, with five first-time winners in each of those seasons.

With 19 races to go, do you see three of Ryan Preece, Zane Smith, Riley Herbst, Todd Gilliland, John Hunter Nemechek, Noah Gragson, Ty Dillon, Connor Zilisch, or Cody Ware taking a checkered flag in 2026?

Given how some of these guys run well on superspeedways, it's hard to rule anything out of the realm of possibility - but the odds are probably best with Preece eventually getting his win, or perhaps Zane Smith or John Hunter Nemechek finding themselves in the right place at the right time, or Connor Zilisch next week at Sonoma (Austin Hill-isms aside).

Do we see a record this year, or have we reached the peak with Gibbs, Hocevar, and Heim?

EDIT: If Austin Hill is still filling in for the #33 at superspeedways, he should be taken into consideration as well.

New season plot I'd like to see: Bill has two kids.

The purists won't like this, but what the heck.

Bill slept with the two Dauterive widows that were not his cousin, so imagine he got them both pregnant and the children were kept a secret from him, and Gilbert either goes along with the secret or doesn't know either (the former would create a gaping hole in my plot, admittedly). In the new season it's revealed in a flashback that the widows were going to introduce the children to him, and travelled to Arlen to meet him, but when they got Bill's house, he's doing something off the cuff (stollen tank episode?) and they decide not to tell him and drive off.

Bill discovers he has children - maybe one of them joins the army and Bill's brought back to the base to train the next generation of sergeant barbers and one of those trainees is his kid. With Bill being Bill, it would get out of hand, but ultimately he can finally be a father and have some sort of consistent happiness on the program.

Idk, maybe this sounds like crap. As I await your thoughts, I'm going to go stare at and admire my WD40 can now.

Bats?!

I've lived in North Texas my entire life, mainly by DFW Airport, and I have never encountered a bat in this part of Texas until about fifteen minutes ago. At Roughly 3PM, it was smacking against our windows facing the back yard. It flew off, then about two minutes later it did it again, and then flew away for good. My dogs were outside, but I'm 90% certain it didn't go near them, and they're up to date on vaccines. They both came to the door when I called them, and are acting normally.

Has anyone else in Plano ever encountered a bat at this time of day? I know summer is when they're most active, but still, it's 3PM - not dusk. Do I need to be alarmed, for the sake of my dogs?

Normalize high school bands playing the national anthem

Given how bad a lot of the national anthems have been lately, mainly for Trucks and O'Reilly, but also a few for Cup, they should just start having local high school bands play almost every national anthem at races. The truck series today had a high school band, and it was great.

Unless it's a Crown Jewel, Talladega, Bristol, or another special race, where they can get someone major to sing it, just highlight local high school bands and make that a special event for them.

Seriously, I'd give a kidney for this diecast. At the very least I'd pay $250 to get past the licensing issue.
