Moving to Albany for 2.5 months from the Western US, what should I know?
Hey, you lovely people!
I'm a college student (24M) moving to Albany in mid-June until the end of August for an internship with a local museum (I'm being vague for privacy's sake) and I've been getting a feel for the city through research and through the general vibes of this subreddit, and thus far I have a pretty positive perspective of the city and the capital region. Compared to my hometown subreddit, it seems fairly calm. I love the history of the area, we don't have anything like it where I live, and so many interesting places are scattered around the region. As a history buff I'm really looking forward to exploring some of the historic houses, churches, government buildings, and so on. I'll be living in the Pine Hills area.
First, I want a social life while I'm there. I don't drink, but I'm good to hang out in bars. I am gay, and wouldn't mind making a few friends in the queer scene in Albany, and I'd love to know more about the scene there. Outside of the queer scene, what are some other fun social things are there to do where I could make friends?
Second, what restaurants would you recommend I try? I have very broad tastes in terms of food, but I'd like to know about some of the mid priced options (in other words, not so much upscale places, but upscale recommendations are welcome if they're a must-try).
Third, Is there anything I should avoid doing/visiting at all costs?
Fourth, I've watched videos of Albany street tours (just videos of people driving around the city, not walking tours or anything like that), and for a capital city of over 100,000 people, it seems rather quiet. Is that accurate?
