Some of you may remember my post from last week about me calling my mom and while the phone was ringing, it sounded like an old school telephone ringing, a woman who was not my mom answering and saying “who is this” someone in the background saying “why did you hang up on me” and then the phone just keeps ringing like an old school telephone. I called my mom 4 times in a row and got the same exact prompt, but she wasn’t receiving any of my calls she said.

Im pretty good with tech stuff, I checked her phone, call forwarding is not on, her phone was not compromised from what I could tell (she has the newest iPhone). I do not think the call was being forwarded to someone else, since it was the same exact conversation and old school phone ringing every single time. Maybe a recording of some sort?

It hasn’t happened to me again. But my mom told me that her friend told her it happened to her when she tried to call my mom yesterday. And she’s in an entirely different state, different phone, different carrier. And she tried calling my mom and few times after that, and also got the same exact thing.

Officially confused and slightly concerned.

My suspicion is that it’s some sort of automated recording , but from who, and why is the biggest question.

Curious to see if anyone else has ever experienced this, or could help me get to the bottom of this issue.

I called my mom today and immediately when the phone was ringing it was weird, it sounded like an old school phone ringing. And then I hear a woman’s voice, in a way that sounded like the microphone was being covered but it was so hard to hear. So I was like “mom I think your microphone is covered” and very faintly I hear a woman’s voice very concerned go “who is this?” In the same muffled tone. Meanwhile, I’m still hearing the old school phone ringing in the background. It’s all really hard to hear. I don’t answer her because I’m like okay this is not my mom. My mom was out grocery shopping by herself. Not with a friend or anything and my mom would never answer my phone call asking “who is this”. And then I hear a second woman’s voice go “why did you hang up on me” and then I hear what sounds like someone hanging up the phone on their end, but I was still connected, still hearing the old school phone ringing. I hang up, and call my mom back immediately. Same exact thing happens. Called her about 4 times and this continued to happen until I finally was able to get through to her. And she says that was the first call she got from me in that time period.

I’m pretty good with technology, and apple products especially, my mom and I both have the new iPhones, different carriers though. I was also connected to my CarPlay. This is the first time I’ve ever been stumped on a tech issue. And also was the weirdest tech issue I’ve ever experienced.

At first I thought maybe, my call to her somehow weirdly got rerouted to like the back of the grocery store? But then me calling back 4 times and getting the same exact prompt is what’s concerning me. I’m gonna check my mom’s phone when I’m with her next and make sure she wasn’t somehow hacked. She’s good with tech too for her age, so she doesn’t fall for scams that are going around so I can’t imagine I’ll find much there.

I’d say my most concerning theory though is that this could be the start of a spoofing spam call. And they were trying to record my voice to then scam my mom.

Any other theories, tips, and resolutions are appreciated.
