“Just working for my Christmas bonus!”

We have a fairly new nanny, she’s been with us for under 2 months. Overall she has been not great but not flat out terrible either, maybe slightly below average. Lately whenever she does something that I guess she would perceive as “above and beyond” (but really I feel like is just part of regular nanny duties) like wiping down high chair, emptying diaper pail or putting away kids’ clean dishes and we happen to thank her for it, she replies “just working for my Christmas bonus!” and sometimes she’ll say “I take cash!” or something.

I do find this a little tacky and off putting — we’ve never discussed any kind of bonus. We have given nice cash bonuses to previous nannies in the past but they’d been with us for a while and had also been exceptional. And, hadn’t asked for it lol. With our current nanny’s mediocre performance combined with how short of a time she’s been with us, honestly wasn’t sure if a bonus was in the works besides maybe a modest gift card or something….?

Nanny pushing back on my rule about teaching flips to 4yo

So my daughter is 4 and she has a full time nanny. She has expressed to both of us an interest in cheer and tumbling, like she wants to learn to do flips and stuff, which I think is very cool and I support!

Our nanny did cheerleading in high school and can still do a few basic tricks. She began teaching 4yo some things like round-offs and back hand springs and said they would eventually do back tucks. I was uncomfortable with this because it seemed unsafe — nanny isn’t certified to teach this in any way and I would hate for any kind of accident to happen, both for 4yo’s sake and the nanny’s.

I asked nanny to please not teach any tricks where 4yo’s hands and feet are off the ground at the same time. I felt like this was pretty reasonable because they could practice safer things like cartwheels and walkovers together and I feel like there’s less of a chance of injury. We signed 4yo up for tumbling class starting in the winter so she’ll get safe instruction from professionals there.

Anyway when I asked nanny she honestly seemed really annoyed with it and kind of went back and forth with me which I wasn’t expecting. She said she’s perfectly qualified to teach flips and that it wasn’t necessary to make 4yo wait until the winter for lessons when she was there and could teach her. She agreed in the end but I don’t think she’s happy. I feel like I’m being reasonable but nanny feels the complete opposite. Would love outside perspectives.
