The difference between mild and severe/catastrophic

My partner has tinnitus. He's had it about 2 years. It is a 'slight high pitched ring when it's quiet.' He hears it some night, but not all. His is mild.

I developed mine about 14 months ago - 5ish tones, oscillating, reactive, dysacusis - after illness and losing some hearing. I'd classify it as severe on a good day, possibly catastrophic on the worst.

We were talking yesterday about how much money we would pay to get rid of it. He said at most, he would pay $100 to get rid of his, certainly not more. Meanwhile, I would pay our entire net worth (high 6 figures), including the house and pension, to get rid of mine. He found that hard to believe, buts its the gods honest truth. I'd actually live on the street and start from 0 again to have another shot at life and silence.

I think I've found a new way to classify tinnitus - severity and life impact is based on what you would be willing to give up in order to eliminate it.

NSW Police say 'body' found in suitcase at Oallen believed to be sex doll

Last night, the news in Australia was reporting that a body had been found in a suitcase. Who was this missing woman? Was this a known missing person or not?

12 hours later, we've discovered it was actually a sex doll.

Why aren't strata fees listed on ads?

Every single buyer will want to know what the strata fees are. Just list it on the bloody ad instead of having to ask for it. What is even worse is that they will often list what the rates and water fees are - values which you'll have a good idea what they are anyway - but not the strata fees, which are highly varied.

I get that it's to get you sucked into viewing and not discounting a property as you think the fees are too high. However, I think it should be a requirement that current strata fees are listed in the ad.

I'm in Sydney. Is it like this everywhere in Australia?

How many sounds do you have?

I counted over the past day and I can hear...6 different sounds. Ringing, hissing, electrical buzz in the middle of the head and a loud low frequency drone. I can't be in quiet and have a conversation as the drone switches off and on with speech or TV. Some sounds oscillate, some are constant. I also get some ear pain and have some hearing loss. I've tried hearing aids and they just made things louder. It's truly awful and life ruining.

Everyone I know who has tinnitus has 1 tone and they can 'only hear it when they think about it.' My partner does, and told me today he wouldn't even pay $20 to get rid of it. I would pay a million dollars to get rid of mine. I've had it over a year and I feel no better than I did when it kicked off.

Just looking for others who have to deal with something similar. I can't express how much I hate this condition.

I can't watch TV in the quiet

I have this low tone tinnitus which is horrible in its intrusiveness. It buzzes quite loudly, but when I watch TV and there is sound it disappears. But the SECOND there is a break or people stop speaking I hear it again. So its constantly turning off and on when I watch television, or even talk to people in a quiet room.

The only way I can manage is to have a dehumidifier or fan on a high setting so it sort of cancels out the buzz.

Does anyone else have something like this too or am I alone with this monstrosity from the depths of hell? How in the world do you manage? I've had it almost a year and it's still the same, it hasn't faded in the slightest. It honestly feels like it is ruining my mental health, and my life.

Canada has major issues with forest fires every summer now. Does Russia - with a similar climate - having the same issue?

Many Americans are annoyed and claiming the fires in Canada are due to poor forest management practices. It's obviously mostly linked to climate change instead. Russia has a similar climate with vast area of forest. Have they seen huge growth in fires - both # and severity - recently as well?

ETA - I'm western Canadian before anyone gets too touchy, and I'm pissed off at the narrative in America after spending the last 10 summers being smoked out by fires in California/Oregon/Washington.

Does anyone else look at old pictures (from the 80s/90s) and think people seemed genuinely happier?

Candid pictures of people at weddings, parties etc just seemed so carefree. Little makeup, no posing, no big lips or eyebrows, no filters. People just seemed more genuine and happy. Is it me or is this just nostalgia?

Hearing issues worse than tinnitus.

Dysacusis.

With a lot of sounds (my washing machine or dryer, certain cars, planes flying overhead, some fans, the HVAC system), the sound of my tinnitus is distorted into a sort of rhythmic pulse. I also hear a whistle above the a/c unit, but at least this doesn't pulse.

I'd pay a lot of money just to only have a straight ringing tone rather than this crap (I have cochlear damage).

FML.

Can you work? What do you do?

I have quite severe multi tonal, reactive tinnitus and dysacusis after losing a chunk of my hearing last year. Some days I also get quite a lot of ear pain. It's been the worst experience of my life.

I've gone from having quite a responsible noisy job with continuous communication all day (dealing with appointments every 20 mins all day long - think a busy and loud healthcare setting) to feeling like work is a living hell. I dropped down to 2 days a week as it was just impossible to continue in the same role, but I still find it impossible to manage. Between the struggle hearing, the reactive tinnitus and the insomnia I'm just done.

I can't go on on like this. I think my profession is over.

However. I'm only in my 30s. I can't retire financially. What roles do people do? I really wish I had a computer job where I could work from home, something with much less communication and where I could manage my environment a lot better. It's just not possible in my profession. For those who have changed jobs after this, what sort of jobs did you transition to?

I'm so upset. I trained a long time for this career and thought I had a secure job for life. I've tried to battle through but I just don't think I can do it anymore :(

How long did you have 'dark' thoughts for?

I don't mean to be intentionally negative or dramatic here, but just wondering if others go through this?

I've had quite severe tinnitus and dysacusis for just over a year now after sudden hearing loss. I was always a positive upbeat person before. But now, I have regular suicidal thoughts. I still get out and live my life as much as I can, but it just feels like I'm constantly on edge and borderline hate waking up and facing another day of this crap...forever. I regularly feel 'what is the point' and have passive thoughts of ending it all, pretty much every day.

I've tried meds, I've tried exercise, I've tried hearing aids, I've tried just saying "F it" and ignoring it. But I have about 5 different sounds which are reactive and 1 which oscillates and.....man it's hard to live with this noise. Particularly when you know there is no end in sight. Its such a bloody curse isn't it?

People suck

I do some work at an RSPCA. We had somebody come in a few weeks back to adopt a kitten. All good, they left happy with a cute 10 week old ginger. 2 hours later they came back, wanting to adopt another kitten. They had left their balcony door open, the kitten had got out and jumped/fallen off their 2nd floor balcony. They 'didn't want to go looking for it' and decided it would be easier to 'just come back in and get another one.' Oh, and they didn't want to pay anything as they had already paid the adoption fee once!

I've rarely been so angry. I sent them home without another kitten and put a black mark next to their file. FFS we don't deserve cats :(

Does anyone else have a moving/wandering tone?

The high pitch ringing I understand. I've got used to it after over a year, even though it can get quite loud. It rides above everything, but I understand it and have learned to live with it.

But I have this lower pitch tone which undulates/pulses erratically. It's not in time with my heartbeat. And it seems to change and become more erratic when I have sound around me? It's ever changing and has driven me to the edge. Its awful. Does anyone else have something similar to this? How do you habituate to a tone which changes by the second? I'd give anything to just have the ringing in my left ear instead.
