old battle axe, new lease on life
I picked up this T580 in 2018 at the start of medical school—i7-8650U with MX150 GPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and UHD 4K display. It’s been absolutely thrashed through years of travel, gaming, heavy workloads, and now carried me through surgical residency.
The screen has long had occasional, intermittent power-state dependent rolling and static that recently worsened. Unwilling to part with it, I looked into upgrades and repairs. I replaced the LCD with an identical OEM 4K 40-pin panel, swapped the LCD cable, installed a new internal battery, upgraded the Wi-Fi card, and quadrupled the RAM to 64gb with a matched pair of Samsung modules. I also deep-cleaned the heatsink and fans, then repasted the CPU and GPU.
It came back together really well and started right back up with zero issues. Everything now runs flawlessly. What an incredibly well-engineered machine.
