Best MP5 variant to get my boyfriend for his birthday? I know basically nothing about guns 😭
Hi! I’m looking for some advice because I want to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday. He’s really into guns and wants to keep building his collection, but I personally know almost nothing about them.
He’s mentioned wanting an MP5, but after looking online I realized there are a ton of different versions and I have no idea what the differences are or which ones are actually worth the money.
I’m mainly trying to figure out what brands/models I should be looking at and where people usually shop for them. I have the budget for the gift, but the actual purchase/paperwork would be done under him.
What MP5-style firearm would you recommend in terms of quality, reliability, and overall value? I’d also love to know which brands/models you would avoid. Thank you!! I’m trying to make this a really good birthday surprise for him.

Found out my grandfather has a Mosin Nagant in his safe that his father passed down to him.
I visit my grandparents every August and I know my grandfather is into guns a little and I asked to check out his safe. In the back was a Mosin Nagant in nearly perfect condition. Zero rust, pitting, denting or scratching. The only problem I saw was dust. He told me his father brought it back from Europe during WWII and eventually gave it to him. My dad actually told me when he was younger (ages 15 through 35 or so) he owned the rifle but his dad asked for it back. Tonight my dad asked for it back again and actually got it. Im so excited to have this gun at my disposal, especially it being so old and in such good condition. Once I get back home, Ill definitely post pictures of it and fire it.
“The Twins”
Here are two big bore revolvers we affectionately refer to as The Twins.
Top is a S&W 460 XVR, however it isnt an ordinary specimen. This one is a Whitetails Unlimited Pennsylvania Edition 1 of 300. my father and I went Dutch on it, acquired it from an old family friend. Got the gun, a load of casings, factory Hornady ammo and a pair of early Walker electronic ear pro. It’s been years and I still don’t need to reload ammo for it. Shooting 45 long colts out of it are an absolute blast. The 460 magnum rounds are a show stopper for sure.
Bottom is a classic 500 S&W magnum. Nothing fancy just 50 caliber goodness. Dad and I split this one too and got a “buddy needs cash fast and is having a blowout sale on his firearm collection” deal. Spent the difference on price between this one and a new and bought enough ammo that we still haven’t needed to reload for it. 500 special is a neat cartridge. I’ll be loading lots of them first when the time comes.
One of my favorite shooters
This little 10/22 I put together might be one my favorites to shoot. Top ten atleast. Bar-S receiver, PMACA chassis, pike arms 4.5” barrel, form 1 can and basic furniture. Foregrip is cut at an angle so the mag can rock in/out. Worked the trigger over, polished some internals and added an over gravel screw to the trigger. Even more awesome that all parts can easily be swapped around and the gun can’t be reconfigured in minutes.
Why is AR-15 prefered more than PCC for home defense?
I often see the overpenetration argument as the main one. 7 yards is a pretty realistic distance for most home defense scenarios and I don't fully get why AR-15s in 5.56 get recommended so much for this. It's a fast, light round, and at that range it probably hasn't gone far enough to yaw and fragment like it's supposed to, so the whole "5.56 overpenetrates less than 9mm" thing might not even apply indoors.
A 9mm PCC seems like it'd make more sense here tbh. Lighter gun, less loud, less recoil, cheaper ammo to actually practice with.
What am I missing? Is it stopping power, familiarity with the platform or something else?
Aliens Marine Pulse Rifle
Just got this bad boy back from the shop I got a custom cerakote job done on. AR in 5.56 10.3 inch with the Manticore Arms Ripley Rail.
How much is insurance for my Gun Range?
I'v been co-running a gun shop for nine years now, mostly transfers, used trade ins and a decent ammo wall. We're finally knocking through into the unit next door for six lanes and a rental counter, steel is ordered and the permits cleared last month. My retail policy renews in November and when I told my agent about the range he said it changes everything and he'd have to shop it, which I have decided means he has no idea.
Apparently the rental guns are the part underwriters hate. I know general liability insurance is the baseline, but two people have now told me accident and health insurance with participant coverage is the piece that actually matters on a range. Anyone here running a range attached to a store, are you carrying both of those, or is GL doing the job on its own? Numbers would help more than theory.
Local PD trade in
Bushmaster XM15-E2s 14.5" H BAR pin and welded to 16.5"+ with an ak74 style brake. When I was a young man my dad and I went halves on this rifle from our local gun shop. This was our first AR15 style rifle. It was a trade in from our towns police department, and it must have been an extra because it was cherry when we got it. Still looks good but we've put a few round through it in the last 14 years. I change the furniture around here and there. I helped my dad with the form 1 process and removed the pin and weld keeping the brake for the original look. Now he can put his can on it.
Living vicariously…
I always see awesome gun wall displays in this sub. Super jealous. My wife let me create this “gun wall” for my son. I’m hoping it is a gateway gun wall… and eventually once my son is grown up I can have the real thing… 😉
Traded my S&W M&P M2.0 for this little beauty. Brand new Beretta APX A1 carry

Mannlicher Shoenouer M1908
I'm overjoyed to have added a trophy gun to my collection.
This is a Steyr M1908 in 8x56 Mannlicher Shoenouer with, as far as I can tell, an factory original scope.
