Been trying to get a handle of the backyard after a housemate who was taking care of it and making some choices on what to do with it that seem odd to me, left. It kind of fell into disarray and we’ve been mostly weed whacking and trying to get it manageable again so we can have a nice backyard space. These pictures are after a week or so of work weedwacking and trimming.

For context, the backyard used to be wood chips and bio cloth or whatever and that all got torn up and they planted California native grass and some tress and other plants. Just need some advice for what to do to actually maintain and make this a nice place to be. Having a nice garden and all that. Maybe this is a question for r/gardening but any advice would be appreciated.
