One thing I’ve noticed after living in Korea for a while is that the Korean skincare products that blow up overseas aren’t always the ones I see people here actually reaching for.
I’ve lived in Seoul and worked in K-beauty, so I’ve spent a probably unreasonable amount of time reading ingredient lists, comparing formulas, and trying different products. At some point, friends also started asking me what I’d actually recommend, so I’ve tried a lot of moisturizers over the years.
After ~5 years, these are the five I keep coming back to.
1. Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream
It’s pretty thick but when my skin is really dry or my barrier is feeling rough, that’s exactly what I want.
I usually reach for it in winter or after my skin has been through too much. I’ve also seen Aestura recommended quite a bit at dermatology clinics here, which makes sense given how focused it is on barrier care.
2. Aestura Atobarrier 365 Lotion
Basically the lighter sibling of the cream.
I prefer this in summer or when my skin is dehydrated but doesn’t want a heavy layer sitting on top.
It’s one of those products that isn’t particularly exciting, but I somehow keep finishing the bottle which probably says more than anything else.
3. Hanyul Pure Artemisia Calming Water Cream
This one feels like a summer moisturizer to me. It's light and really easy to put on when it’s hot and humid outside.
I reach for it when my skin feels a little irritated or flushed, rather than when I need something super nourishing. The mugwort/Artemisia also feels very fitting for that kind of calming lightweight routine.
4. Dr.G R.E.D Blemish Clear Soothing Cream EX
Probably the easiest recommendation if you dislike heavy moisturizers. It has that bouncy gel texture and sinks in pretty quickly.
Dr.G is also one of those brands that feels really familiar in Korea. I feel like everyone has either used this or knows someone who has.
5. Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Lotion
it's a gentle moisturizer that you can use pretty much anywhere even on your body.
I’ve seen it in many Korean households, and it’s one of those products that gets used by the whole family.
If I had to keep it really simple:
Dry / damaged barrier → Aestura Cream
Dehydrated but hate heavy creams → Aestura Lotion
Hot, irritated summer skin → Hanyul Artemisia
Oily skin + wants something light → Dr.G
Sensitive skin + wants something simple → Illiyoon
I’ve used all five at different points over the years, but there’s definitely one I keep coming back to more than the others. I’ll share my personal holy grail in the next post.
Also curious what Korean moisturizer do you actually keep repurchasing?
And if you’re outside Korea, what’s one Korean skincare product that everyone seems to love but you just don’t understand the hype around?
Hi everyone!
I’ve spent most of my life studying art and design (eventually getting accepted into several US art schools) and currently work in marketing here in Korea. I’ve always naturally applied design elements like line, color, and texture to personal style, which turned into my friends constantly coming to me for outfit checks, silhouette advice, and shopping recs.
I’m thinking about starting a personal styling project on the side, and I'd love to work on a few real case studies first. So, I’m offering free personalized style consults for the first few people who comment!
Style is super personal but I can offer a fresh, objective eye rooted in design principles & current Korean trends to help you feel your best.
