Severe insomnia that gets worse after weightlifting – frequent awakenings despite multiple sleep medications

I’m a 21-year-old male and I’ve been struggling with severe insomnia for a long time. My biggest problem isn’t falling asleep—it’s staying asleep.
Almost every night I wake up multiple times. Sometimes it’s every hour, sometimes every two hours. I usually manage to fall back asleep, but my sleep is extremely fragmented, and I never wake up feeling refreshed.
One thing I’ve noticed is that my insomnia becomes much worse after intense strength training, especially after heavy leg workouts. I train in the gym about 5 days a week, and my sessions last around 2 hours. The day after a hard workout, I often experience:
More frequent awakenings.
Feeling unusually hot during the night.
Restless sleep.
Poor physical recovery.
On days when I don’t train, my sleep sometimes improves slightly, although I still wake up several times during the night.
My current nighttime medications are:
-Daridorexant 50 mg
-Mirtazapine 15 mg
-Trazodone 50mg
-Triazolam 0.25 mg
-Melatonin 2 mg
Even with this combination, I still have frequent awakenings. Falling asleep isn’t the issue—the problem is maintaining sleep throughout the night.
I’m also starting to feel like I may need to adjust my treatment more significantly. I’ve been considering whether it might be worth trying something stronger, like quetiapine, or even changing psychiatrist to get a fresh perspective. The mirtazapine actually helped a lot during the first two weeks, but after that it basically stopped having any noticeable effect.
Has anyone experienced insomnia that consistently gets worse after resistance training or intense exercise? Could this be related to cortisol, body temperature, overtraining, or something else?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had a similar experience or found something that helped.
Thanks for reading.
