First 5k Ever

I ran my first organized 5k ever yesterday 8/8. It was the day before my 54th birthday. I ran a local Park run event to celebrate my birthday and celebrating massive weight loss (125 lbs).

I was encouraged by my wife, kids, 1 sister and my parents. It was a fun run and a great learning experience. My time was 32 min 05 seconds from Parkrun and 29 minutes 42 seconds on Strava.

I am really happy with my results and plan to do many more.

Edit: I have always preferred exercising alone, but now see the benefits of running in a group. Pacing off other people and having to pass or let people through was more exciting than just running isolated.

1st runs and advice sought

I am a 53 yo man 6 foot tall that has been way overweight for the last 35 years of my life. I have brought my weight down from 330lbs down to 210. I tried jogging a few times while I lost weight and it always set me back with too much knee and ankle pain.

Last week I jogged a half mile 5 times during my 4.5 mile morning walk. I felt just a little sore so I just walked a few days after and jogged again the same 5 times .5 miles.

This week I was able to go 1 mile 3 times and every other day. 3rd jog will be tomorrow.

I have a pair of Brooks Ghost Max2, Mizuno Wave Sky 8, 2 pairs Anta PG7 v2, and Hoka Mach 6.

Are there any specific shoes I should be jogging in? Any other specific advice on how to keep my journey going?

A Full Day of Coffee

Hey all, I just wanted to drop a quick note. I woke up at 5:30AM today and made a big 25g dose of Bird and Bear Hopscotch. It is an easy to drink light-medium roast.

I then drove to and spent the day in Santa Cruz, CA today. I have been doing this for the last 6 weeks every Friday.

Today was a bit special. I stopped at Cat and Cloud and got a cup of each of their single origins on batch today Carmen Cáchala and La Folie. It turned out that La Folie was out at a half cup so they poured me a 3rd coffee, El Tejo. All three were hits for me. El Tejo was the darkest roast I have enjoyed in a while. It was a bit toasty for my general preference but still very enjoyable.

After a hike at UCSC and a trip for lunch at the pier (Gilda’s Cioppino is a winner). I stopped at Verve and got a pour over at the roastery location for the drive over the mountain back home. It was late afternoon so not very busy and they actually made a hand pour in a Dwell dripper.

This one was a shocker. I got the Wilder Blend. Wow. Over the top funk to say the least. Hard pineapple herbal tea would be the best way to describe it. If you like funky strong flavor, this is your cup. If not stay away from this blend. Wilder is the correct name for this one.

I have befriended a local roaster that roasts light to ultra light. I know very few people are aware of this roaster. He is super small, sells at the farmers market, and a good day is selling 12-16 bags.

I would like to ask anyone interested in unknown roasters to add their favorite local roasters to this post. It would be great if they have a sight for ordering. If not, just list roasters name, city/state, and what you have bought recently.

I am adding Strait Coffee Roasters in San Jose, Ca as my entry. Austin the roaster is a great guy, has an instagram where you can watch him roast, talk to customers as he makes pour overs for people.
