I will never understand why DS3 and Elden Ring didn’t expand on Hexes

I’d argue that hexes and dark AR is the best thing to come out of ds2, more so than powerstancing. I recently replayed it with the sole intention of making a dark build, and I find it incredibly satisfying.

Sure in ds3 you have the deep soul and soul dreg sorceries and in ER you have black flame and death spells but they’re just one off instances of a miracles, sorceries, or pyromancies. In ds2 hexes were its own category of spells with its own properties. Spells had specific catalysts, you even have an instance like Caithas chime where it could only cast hexes. Then you get into the resonant spells where you sacrifice souls in exchange for more power, which is such a unique and rewarding mechanic. Then they just…never bring it up again.

I will never understand this. Personally/selfishly, I think the dark element is simply cooler than fire/lightning/holy and I want it back. But objectively speaking, this type of “something gained, something lost” mechanic would fill a niche in the magic system. I would’ve loved to see how it functions with a mana system rather than limited spells too. I think they could’ve gotten very creative with these types of spells, and even have hexes that deplete hp instead of souls for enhanced effects which would lead to some really interesting builds.

V revealing their backstory and why they’re doing all of this feels like a climactic conversation in their relationship (friend or otherwise) with Judy and Panam. This whole time V is just some mysterious stranger who shows up and solves everyone’s problems with no explanation. However the actual conversations just feel a bit lackluster to me. Judy basically just goes “damn that sucks” and then you leave her apartment.

I’m rewatching daredevil and the first season there’s an entire episode with the A plot being Matt explaining himself and the daredevil backstory to his friend for a whole day. It touched on everything a normal person would ask after finding out their blind friend is a superhero.

Ik movies and games don’t have the luxury to drag these conversations out, and ik you eventually have to get back to the actual game, but I’d love an option to tell a long version of Vs story. Get into Jackie a bit more, Takemura, V and Johnnys relationship, etc. Just a little more back and forth I would’ve enjoyed. Ik it’s a little nitpicky to just want more content, but am I valid for thinking those scenes were a tad underwhelming?

Currently replaying through the fromsoft games and am excited to replay ds2 for the first time in years, at least before ER. I definitely want to do a hex focused build, and I can’t recall ever finishing a strength build. So I was hoping to have some hexes complement a primarily melee playthrough, maybe like 65-35 in favor of melee.

As I was thinking about it though, I realized that is so many stats I have to pump levels into not even including vigor. Str, fth, int, att, end, and adp. I have no intention of playing through NG+, nor do I want to do heavy soul farming so realistically I’m ending my playthrough ~SL120ish. I also don’t want to plan out my weapons themselves and just use what I’m drawn to like a first playthrough.

Anyone have experience with this? Does the 30/30 int/fth soft cap provide sufficient damage for hexes? Maybe sacrifice str scaling in favor of dark infused? I’m assume I’ll have to be a bit more glass cannon-y with less vgr. Or am I overthinking and should just level everything somewhat evenly

I’ve been playing the fromsoft games since dark souls 2 release and have hundreds of hours in each game. I was on PC and recently got a ps5 so I could finally play bloodborne and DeS. BB came first and I didn’t have too much trouble with it. Everything prior to Elden Ring just feels so simple.

So I go into the DeS remake expecting to absolutely steamroll everything. I remember the poor enemy tracking in DS1 and small movesets, and this is its predecessor. After all, I killed Radahn, Melania, Midir, Orphan of Kos. Bayle would’ve sent an OG DeS player into cardiac arrest. 1-1 was a cake walk as expected, tower knight was laughable…I was so wrong.

DeS environment is the hardest enemy in the entire series. It will shamelessly place an enemy in the thinnest corridor where my slash weapons can’t even hit it without smacking the wall. I was stuck in the Stone Tunnel maze for 30 min before deciding to off myself and restart, and that was after eating a hydrogen bomb around that sharp corner, you know the one. At 4-2, killing the “necromancer” I noticed got me a lot of souls for the time, and before progressing too far, I wanted to spend them. It took me at least 4 tries to retrieve my souls from the 2nd area and backtrack past the gold skeletons, I ended up with 55k souls lol And don’t even get me started on Valley of Defilement. Speaking of backtracking, these runbacks are absolutely brutal, and in cases like 4-2, there’s no running past those enemies without wasting grass. Thank god the bosses are very trivial.

And this isn’t a rant or complaining post, I just wanted to share how overly confident I was and how this game is kicking a vets ass in a completely different way than how Elden Ring can. Such a unique feel to it, very interesting to see the full progression of the games now. I would however complain about the weapon upgrading but that’s for another post
