FIRST OF ALL LOOK AT HIS EARS 🥹

I’ve been feeding him, I saved him from another cat yesterday after he’s been coming over for a week and a half.
We’ve removed burrs from his fur and he just rolled around while we were pulling at his fur.
He hides under my chair from other cats.
If I call for him when I go outside, he runs over from wherever he is if he’s in hearing range.
I also posted on the Facebook in my town and nobody claimed him - he’s free game… right?

Anyway, getting him the snip, a flea treatment, and Dexter Apollo will be coming inside… (he tries to come inside now)

So,
I’m a first time mom, and my ex was abusive. There was an incident which left him in mostly my custody. I won’t go into details, that’s just some background.

I’ve been mostly doing it alone ever since.

My biggest question is how can I help when he goes from 0-100… for example.. if he wants a big plate and I give him a small one.. he acts as though his life is over.
We’ve done the blowing out the candles thing, we’ve done the pause and breathe thing. I’ve given him many tools. Sometimes the meltdowns last a minute, sometimes 30.

How do I help him?
My spouse also has a hard time with it, and we both understand he’s a kid, we want to work with him. But we’re unsure how to help him more than the things we’ve already done.

I’m sure some of you have great ideas, and we would like to hear some (:
