Orbital Sander Question

Hello all, I am coming on here to ask if anyone has any tips/tricks to help find those swoop/loop patterns on wood before putting on a finish. I feel like no matter how careful I am I always have at least one scratch on my projects.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have a Golden Retriever/Husky/Malamute mix (basically a high-energy super mutt), and I’m struggling with crate training and leaving him alone.
He hates his crate. I’ve spent the last 6 months trying all the usual advice—positive reinforcement, feeding him in it, treats, slow exposure, etc.—and I’ve made basically zero progress.
The problem is:
He does great when he sleeps near me (on the floor or nearby), but I don’t want him on my bed long-term
If he’s not in the crate or near me, he destroys things, gets into stuff, and will pee/poo on the floor or furniture—even though he’s fully potty trained when I’m around
I exercise him a lot (runs, playtime), do daily training, and give him chews, puzzle toys, and things to keep him occupied. None of it seems to carry over when he’s alone.
I’m trying to figure out how to get him to:
Be calm and behave when I’m at work
Sleep independently without needing to be right next to me
Stop destructive behavior when unsupervised
At this point I’m wondering if I’m missing something fundamental or if crate training just isn’t the right approach for him.
Any advice would be appreciated.
