Title: 26M, single and trying to stay halal — but struggling with modern marriage expectations

Assalamu alaikum everyone,
I’m a 26-year-old Muslim man, currently single, and I wanted to share something that has been on my mind and hear your honest opinions.
I have been trying my best to stay away from zina and other haram relationships. I know controlling the nafs is not always easy, especially when you are young, but I genuinely want to protect myself and live according to Islam. I regularly make dua that Allah protects me from sins and from anything that He dislikes.
I also want to get married. I believe marriage is one of the best ways to protect yourself from zina and to complete half of your deen. But sometimes I feel that we, as Muslims, have made marriage much more difficult than it needs to be.
Nowadays, there can be many expectations before a man is considered “ready” for marriage. He may be expected to have a separate house, a high salary, a car, savings, a completely established career, and sometimes even generational wealth. I understand that a woman wants security and that a husband has responsibilities toward his wife. I am not saying those responsibilities should be ignored.
My problem is that I don’t have generational wealth. I am working, earning, saving and trying to build my future through my own efforts. I am not rich or completely settled yet, and I cannot immediately provide the kind of lifestyle that some families expect.
At the same time, I sometimes wonder: Are we putting too much emphasis on what a man already has instead of looking at what kind of person he is and what he can become?
If a man has iman, good character, responsibility, and a strong work ethic, shouldn’t those qualities also matter? If he is hardworking and genuinely trying to build a stable future, shouldn’t there be some consideration for that?
I understand that a woman and her family have every right to look for financial stability. A man should not marry someone if he knows he cannot fulfill her basic rights and responsibilities. But I also think there is a difference between being financially responsible and expecting someone to already be wealthy before marriage.
Islam encourages us to make nikah simple and not turn marriage into a competition of wealth, weddings, houses and lifestyles. Sometimes it feels like people expect a young man to have everything before he even gets married, while he is still at the beginning of his career.
I don’t want to use this as an excuse to avoid responsibility. I want to work hard, provide for my future wife, improve myself and become financially stable. But I also don’t want to take a haram path simply because marriage is difficult.
So I am trying to have sabr and trust Allah. I believe that if I continue working hard, make dua, stay away from haram and take the proper halal steps, Allah will open the right door at the right time.
For those who are married or have gone through the process:
Do you think modern Muslim families have made marriage unnecessarily difficult?
Should a man’s iman, character, responsibility and willingness to work hard be given more importance alongside his current financial situation?
And for young Muslim men who don’t come from wealthy families: How did you approach marriage when you were still building your career and financial stability?
I would genuinely appreciate advice, especially from people who have been through this situation. Please keep the discussion respectful.

Looking F for nikkah M26

Looking for a Life Partner

I’m looking for a life partner with no unrealistic demands—someone who is educated, understanding, and supportive, and with whom I can grow together in life.

I would like her to have a good understanding of Islam as well as the world around us. I believe a woman plays an important role in shaping the next generation, so having the right values, knowledge, and mindset is important to me.

I’m settled in the UAE. If you feel our thoughts and values might align, feel free to HMU. We can have a conversation, understand each other’s perspectives, and if we feel there’s a good match, we can take things forward and get to know each other better.
