Hi everyone,

At my first appointment with a fertility clinic, they recommended I get genetic carrier screening done—specifically the Horizon panel (testing for ~274 genetic conditions) under code Z31.430.

When I checked with my fertility benefits provider, they told me this test is not covered, which caught me off guard.

Is this common? Do most people end up paying out of pocket for these expanded genetic screening tests?

Also, if you’ve done this test:

How much did it actually cost you?

Did you go through insurance or self-pay?

Were you able to negotiate or get financial assistance?

I’m trying to figure out if there’s a smarter/cheaper way to handle this before moving forward.

I recently started fertility treatment at Texas Fertility Center (Austin) and I have fertility benefits through Maven Clinic. At my first appointment, TFC ordered a set of labs—but I was surprised to find out that none of the labs are done in-house and I was asked to go to an outside lab.

When I checked with Maven, they said it’s unusual for a fertility clinic not to handle labs internally, which has me a bit confused.

Has anyone else here had a similar experience with TFC? Is this normal? Also, if you’ve gone through Aspire Fertility or another clinic in Austin, did they handle labs differently?

Would love to hear how others navigated this, especially when coordinating between clinic + insurance/benefits provider.
