Is my cat having focal seizures?
In the last three days, my cat (12-13 years old, male, neutered) has had two episodes where he has trembled and stared into space for 30 seconds. This is then followed by 2 minutes of lameness in his back legs and instability walking. I am so concerned as I don’t know what could be causing it - the vet says it looks like focal seizures and to just monitor him for now.
He’s been undergoing tests for long-term gastrointestinal problems (diarrhoea, vomiting) so has recently had a chest cavity x-ray (clear), an ultrasound (slight thickening of his intestinal walls, consistent with inflammation), and a GI blood panel (cleared for pancreatitis).
His thyroid levels were a little high so he’s been taking methimazole. We checked his thyroid today at the 3-week mark and now his thyroid levels are on the low end of normal. He has an adjusted dose of methimazole and will start taking that tomorrow.
Could these episodes be linked to the methimazole / low thyroid? Something else? I’m scared we overlooked something. Has anyone else seen this in their cat?
